Blodeuwedd enters her own story already carrying someone else's purpose.

Made from flowers by Math and Gwydion, she is created because Lleu Llaw Gyffes needs a wife and, through his mother's curse, cannot marry a human woman.

She is given beauty. She is given a name.

And she is given a life she did not choose.

The Wildflower Initiation is a contemporary Welsh initiation for those who wish to begin walking with Blodeuwedd and reflecting upon one of the difficult questions her story leaves behind:

What does it mean to become a person when others have already decided who you are supposed to be?

About this initiation

Blodeuwedd appears in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, where Math and Gwydion create her from the flowers of oak, broom and meadowsweet as a wife for Lleu.

Later, while Lleu is away, she meets Gronw Pebr. They become lovers and conspire to kill Lleu. The attempt fails to kill him permanently, and when Gwydion eventually finds Blodeuwedd, he transforms her into an owl as punishment.

It is not an uncomplicated story of liberation.

Nor do I think it needs to become one.

Blodeuwedd causes harm. She is also created without any apparent consideration of what she herself might want. The medieval narrative condemns her betrayal, while a modern reader may reasonably find themselves asking questions the story itself does not resolve about agency, responsibility, imposed identity and choice.

Those tensions are precisely why I find her worth approaching.

The initiation I prepare is not a reconstructed historical Welsh ceremony. It is my contemporary practice, grounded in Blodeuwedd's surviving story and intended to begin a thoughtful relationship with the figure found there rather than replacing her with a simpler modern archetype.

The Wildflower Initiation may suit you if you are beginning to question identities, expectations or roles that have accumulated around you.

Perhaps you have become very good at being what was needed.

Perhaps an old version of yourself no longer fits, but you do not yet know what should replace it.

Or perhaps Blodeuwedd's story has simply stayed with you, and you want to approach her more deliberately without pretending that she is an uncomplicated figure.

This initiation does not ask you to imitate Blodeuwedd's choices.

Instead, her story becomes a place from which to consider your own:

What was chosen for you?

What have you chosen for yourself?

What responsibility accompanies the freedom to choose differently?

And what might you become if neither obedience nor rebellion were required to define you?

Walking with Blodeuwedd

There is a temptation to rescue difficult women from old stories by turning everything they did into empowerment.

I don't think Blodeuwedd needs that from us.

She can be wronged without everything she does becoming right.

She can exercise agency and still be responsible for what she chooses to do with it.

She can be made for another person's purposes without her later attempt to have Lleu murdered becoming a model of liberation.

Allowing all of those things to remain true gives us something considerably more human than an archetype of the “wild feminine”.

For me, that is where Blodeuwedd becomes most interesting.

We cannot ask the flowers what they wanted before they became her. The story gives us no interior voice explaining what Blodeuwedd thought when she first opened her eyes.

But we can notice the question her making leaves behind.

A life may begin beneath the weight of other people's expectations without having to remain there forever.

What comes afterwards still asks us to choose carefully.
