There are thresholds we cross deliberately, and others we recognise only after we have passed through them.

A former way of living may no longer fit. An ending may have occurred without revealing what should follow it. Sometimes change has already begun beneath the surface, while outwardly very little appears to have moved.

Annwn Threshold is a personalised initiation centred upon Arawn and the First Branch of the Mabinogi, prepared for those who wish to explore transformation through relationship with one of the most compelling figures of Welsh medieval tradition.

It is not a pact that binds you to Arawn, nor a promise that invoking him will transform your circumstances.

It is an invitation to approach the threshold.

About this initiation

Arawn appears in the First Branch of the Mabinogi as ruler of Annwn, the Otherworld.

His encounter with Pwyll begins badly.

While hunting, Pwyll drives Arawn's hounds away from a stag they have brought down and allows his own pack to feed upon it. Arawn confronts him, and Pwyll asks how the offence might be repaired.

The answer leads somewhere extraordinary.

The two exchange appearances and places for a year and a day. Pwyll enters Arawn's realm carrying Arawn's likeness and responsibilities, while Arawn takes Pwyll's place in Dyfed.

When Pwyll eventually returns, he does not return quite as the man who left.

Annwn Threshold takes that movement—encounter, crossing, changed perspective and return—as its underlying structure.

I do not present this as a surviving historical initiation to Arawn. The ritual I prepare is contemporary, developed within my own practice in conversation with the Welsh story that inspires it.

This initiation may help you explore

Annwn Threshold may suit a period when you are living between an identity or chapter that has ended and something new that has not yet become fully clear.

It may also suit those drawn specifically towards Arawn who want a structured beginning to that relationship rather than simply invoking him for a particular result.

The work creates space for questions of change, responsibility, boundaries, self-possession and what we carry back from experiences that alter how we understand ourselves.

Transformation here does not mean becoming an entirely different person.

Sometimes it means returning to familiar ground and discovering that you stand upon it differently.

Each Annwn Threshold is prepared individually. Both options include the complete initiation itself and provide a structured beginning for working with Arawn. Deluxe is intended for those who already know they want the initiation to begin a more substantial period of devotional and reflective practice.

Annwn Threshold — Standard Initiation

Best suited when you want to cross the threshold into work with Arawn and receive enough context and guidance to begin exploring that relationship for yourself afterwards.

The Standard Initiation is a complete beginning. You do not need to choose Deluxe in order for the initiation itself to be meaningful, nor are you expected to establish an ongoing devotional practice afterwards.

At the threshold of Annwn

Annwn is difficult to reduce to the later idea of an underworld or realm of the dead.

Welsh literature gives us something stranger and less easily contained: an Otherworld existing alongside the familiar one, encountered through stories of hunting, feasting, altered time, supernatural abundance and crossings between realms.

Mystery belongs here.

I would rather leave some of it intact than pretend that surviving Welsh tradition gives us a complete theology of Arawn or instructions for precisely how he should be approached today.

The initiation therefore begins a conversation rather than defining its ending.

You may continue working with Arawn afterwards. You may find that your attention eventually turns elsewhere. Neither requires breaking a supernatural contract.

A threshold does not tell us what we will become beyond it. It marks the place at which we consent to cross.

May you approach what lies ahead with curiosity, carry what is worth carrying, and leave enough mystery for the road to teach you something you did not already know.
