The Returning Ground

What happens after you order

You will receive Your Rite Begins Here immediately after purchase, a short digital welcome guide explaining what happens next and how your personalised work is prepared. I will then contact you by email to ask what has left you feeling unmoored, displaced or disconnected, what still gives you a sense of steadiness, and what “return” might mean for you now.

You may be thinking about a move, family estrangement, grief, burnout, a long transition, loss of spiritual connection, or simply the quieter sense that you no longer feel fully at home in your own life. You do not need to explain more than you want to. Once I have the information needed to begin, I will prepare the rite within the stated processing period and deliver your photographs and written materials digitally.

Belonging is not always the same as going back

There are times when home no longer means what it once did. A place may have changed, a relationship may have ended, a family story may feel more complicated than before, or the version of yourself that once felt familiar may no longer fit.

The Returning Ground is a personalised rite for those moments. Its purpose is not to return you to the past unchanged, but to help you recognise what still holds, what can become an anchor again, and where belonging may be rebuilt in the life you have now.

The work is centred on Modron through the theme of separation and return. Rather than treating her as a generic earth mother, the rite draws from the story of Modron and Mabon: absence, searching, and the possibility that what has been lost from one place may still be found and received elsewhere.

This rite may suit you if

This work may suit you if you feel displaced after a move, estranged from family or community, disconnected from your own traditions, or unsettled by a period of change that has lasted longer than expected. It may also suit you if you are trying to rebuild a sense of home after grief, burnout, recovery, or a life transition that has altered how you understand yourself.

You may feel rooted in one part of your life and adrift in another. You may miss a place you cannot return to in the same way, or want to create belonging where none existed before. The rite does not assume that home must be inherited, ancestral or geographic. Belonging can be made as well as remembered.

Modron, Mabon and the possibility of return

Modron is known in Welsh tradition as the mother of Mabon, whose disappearance and eventual recovery form part of the wider story preserved in Culhwch ac Olwen. Her place in this rite comes from that pattern of separation, search and return rather than from an invented role as a goddess of earth or hills.

That makes her a fitting figure for work around belonging. Something may be absent without being erased, and return does not always mean restoration to exactly what came before.

The Returning Ground begins there: with the question of what remains connected to you even when you feel far from it, and what kind of home can be made from what still endures.

The Working

Every Returning Ground rite is shaped around the kind of dislocation you are experiencing and moves through three stages: Where You Are Unmoored → What Still Holds → Where You Return.

Where You Are Unmoored
The rite begins by naming where the sense of belonging has broken down. This may be connected to place, family, identity, spiritual practice, work, community, grief, or simply the feeling that familiar parts of life no longer fit together as they once did.

The purpose is not to force an explanation for that loss. It is to recognise where the ground feels uncertain and what kind of absence is actually being felt.

What Still Holds
The second movement turns toward what remains.

This may be a language, landscape, memory, family line, value, habit, object, story, relationship, spiritual practice, or something as ordinary as the way you make tea in the evening. Sometimes belonging survives in very small forms.

This stage asks what still has enough weight to anchor you without pretending that everything else has been restored.

Where You Return
The final movement concerns what “home” can mean now.

That may be a physical place, a renewed relationship with ancestry or tradition, a spiritual practice, a household, a community, or simply a way of inhabiting your own life with less estrangement.

Return does not always mean going back. Sometimes it means recognising the ground that is already willing to receive you.

Standard — The Returning Ground

The Standard Rite is suited to one clearly defined experience of disconnection, displacement or loss of belonging. It includes a personal consultation by email, a complete personalised rite structured through Where You Are Unmoored → What Still Holds → Where You Return, photographs of the completed working, a written account of the rite and its symbolism, and a personalised reflection for continuing the work afterwards.

You will also receive a Companion Guide exploring Modron, themes of separation and return, and practical reflective ways of rebuilding rootedness without forcing yourself back into an old form of belonging.

Deluxe — The Ground That Keeps You

The Deluxe Rite is intended for more layered situations: several kinds of dislocation at once, complicated family history, migration or long-term separation from place, spiritual estrangement, or a sense that home itself has become difficult to define.

It includes everything in Standard, together with an extended consultation, a separate preparatory working, expanded personalised ritual work and a more detailed written account. You will also receive The Ground That Keeps You, an expanded personalised Companion Guide exploring belonging, memory, ancestry, place and the difference between returning and rebuilding, together with a personal Welsh and English reflection, tailored practices for tending rootedness in ordinary life, and one follow-up exchange after you have had time to live with the work.

Choose Deluxe when the question is not simply Where do I belong? but How do I build a life that feels like home when the old answer no longer fits?

Home can be made as well as inherited

Belonging is sometimes described as though it were something we either possess or lose. In practice, it is often more changeable than that.

A person can belong to a place they no longer live in, to a family they hold at a distance, to a language they are still learning, or to a tradition they have returned to slowly. They can also create new forms of belonging that are no less real because they were not inherited.

The purpose of this rite is not to decide which kind of belonging is more authentic. It is to help you notice what still holds, what needs to be built, and what can become ground beneath you again.

Before You Order

The Returning Ground is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item will be shipped. Please allow 1–3 weeks once I have the information needed to begin. Your photographs and written materials will be delivered digitally.

The rite can support reflection, spiritual practice, grounding and a sense of belonging, but it does not guarantee reconciliation with family, return to a particular place, ancestral contact or relief from all feelings of displacement. It is not intended to replace mental-health support, housing or migration advice, family mediation, or other appropriate professional help where those are relevant.

You are not creating an irrevocable spiritual bond with Modron through this rite. Any continued devotional or reflective practice afterwards remains your choice.

Boed i’r tir sy’n dy ddal dy adnabod eto.
May the ground that holds you know you again.

May what still holds become easier to feel, may what has been lost be remembered without ruling you, and may belonging take a form you can live inside now.
