The Offering of the Old Powers

Some forms of protection are built through resistance. Others begin with acknowledgement.

The Offering of the Old Powers is a personalised aberth amddiffynnol — a protective offering — prepared for those times when something feels persistently unsettled, when spiritual heaviness or interference seems to linger, or when the boundaries around self, home, or practice no longer feel as steady as they should.

Unlike most of the rites I prepare, the offering itself is central to this working. An aberth is made in your name to the Welsh Power or Powers most appropriate to the situation, with the rite shaped around protection, reciprocity, and the restoration of a boundary that can hold.

The purpose is not to overwhelm what feels difficult with greater force. It is to re-establish relationship, order, and protection through a deliberate act of giving.

This rite may suit you if

The Offering of the Old Powers may be especially appropriate if you feel that spiritual heaviness, interference, or disturbance has persisted despite ordinary grounding or protective practice; if you want a stronger protective rite for yourself, your home, or your spiritual work; or if a boundary has become weakened and needs to be re-established deliberately.

It may also suit you if you are drawn to protection through offering, reciprocity, and acknowledgement rather than purely defensive or banishing work, or if you have worked with this offering before and feel called to return to it for a new situation or period of vulnerability.

This is a repeatable rite. A previous offering does not make future work unnecessary, because circumstances change. A new home, difficult period, spiritual practice, relationship, or sense of disturbance may call for a different focus and, potentially, a different Power.

The Old Powers

There is no fixed group invoked every time.

The rite is shaped around the concern you bring to it, and the Welsh Power or Powers honoured are chosen accordingly.

Arawn may be appropriate where the work concerns rightful boundaries, restraint, agreements, or the restoration of order.

Gwyn ap Nudd may be appropriate where the concern is strongly liminal, Otherworldly, or connected with troublesome unseen presence.

Rhiannon may be called where protection needs to preserve dignity, composure, endurance, or self-possession.

Ceridwen may be appropriate where the protective work is tied to difficult transition, accumulated residue, or something that must be allowed to change before the boundary can settle again.

Other Welsh figures or currents may be more appropriate in some circumstances.

The decision is made from the situation itself rather than from a fixed correspondence system. The important thing is not assembling as many Powers as possible, but making the right offering, in the right spirit, to those whose stories and qualities genuinely belong to the work.

Offering and Covenant

At the heart of the rite is the aberth amddiffynnol itself: an offering made in your name to the Welsh Power or Powers most appropriate to the situation.

The offering is not an accessory to the rite. It is the rite’s centre.

The work is built around reciprocity. The Power being honoured is not commanded to act, and the offering is not treated as payment for obedience. Instead, the rite establishes or renews a protective relationship through acknowledgement, respect, and exchange.

That is what I mean here by covenant.

It is a deliberately entered relationship around protection and boundary, shaped for the specific working rather than a permanent binding agreement that cannot later be changed or released.

For some clients, the rite may feel like renewing something already familiar. For others, it may be the first time they have approached protection through offering rather than through warding alone.

In either case, the exchange matters.

The Working

I prepare each Offering of the Old Powers individually.

Before beginning, I will ask what has led you to seek the rite, what feels unsettled or vulnerable, whether the concern centres on yourself, your home, or your practice, and whether there are any Welsh figures with whom you already have an established relationship.

From there, I determine the focus of the offering and which Power or Powers are appropriate to honour.

The working may centre on restoring a weakened boundary, seeking protection during a difficult or exposed period, settling spiritual heaviness or disturbance, renewing an existing protective relationship, marking a change of home or circumstance with deliberate safeguarding, or releasing residue from something that has ended while strengthening what remains.

The exact shape of the rite varies because the offering is chosen for the situation rather than drawn from a single fixed formula.

What remains constant is the principle: something is given deliberately, protection is asked for respectfully, and the boundary is tended as a relationship rather than treated as a wall that can simply be raised once and forgotten.

The Offering of the Old Powers — Standard Rite

The Standard Rite is suited to one clear protective concern or situation.

Standard includes:

• a short private consultation by email;
• a personalised protective rite;
• an aberth amddiffynnol made in your name to the appropriate Welsh Power or Powers;
• a photographic record of the completed working;
• a written account of the rite, including who was honoured and why;
• a personalised protective practice for continuing to tend the boundary afterward;

The Standard Rite is complete in itself and is the right choice when the concern is relatively clear and contained.

The Offering of the Old Powers — Deluxe Rite: The Circle Beneath the Stars

The Deluxe Rite is intended for more persistent, complicated, or long-standing situations, or for those who want a deeper protective relationship to be established and tended over time.

Deluxe includes everything in Standard, plus:

• an extended private consultation;
• a separate preliminary cleansing and preparation rite;
• an expanded offering working;
• a more detailed written account;
• an expanded Companion Guide;
• deeper reflection around reciprocity, boundary, spiritual responsibility, and continuing relationship with the Power or Powers honoured;
• a personalised protective charm or devotional text for ongoing use;
• a longer continuing practice for the period after the rite;
• one follow-up message after you have had time to sit with the work.

Choose Deluxe when the concern has persisted for some time, touches several areas of life or practice, or when the protective relationship itself is an important part of what you want to establish.

Protection Through Relationship

Protection can become very defensive very quickly. It can turn into constant scanning, constant reinforcement, or the feeling that every difficulty must be met with stronger walls.

The Offering of the Old Powers takes a different approach.

A boundary is not only something that excludes. It also defines relationship: who is welcomed, what is refused, what is owed, what is acknowledged, and what remains outside.

The aberth amddiffynnol gives those questions a deliberate place within the working.

Rather than asking only how to drive something away, the rite asks what needs to be put back into right relationship so that the boundary itself becomes steadier.

That is why this offering can be returned to. Protection is not always a single act. Sometimes it is a relationship that needs tending when circumstances change.
