There are pursuits we begin knowing where we hope they will lead.

Others ask something more difficult of us.

The work matters, but its outcome is uncertain. The road has been chosen, but only the next stretch can be seen. There may be no assurance that effort will be rewarded, no clear sign that the destination will resemble what we imagined, and no way to remove uncertainty before we begin.

The Hunt Beyond Sight is a personalised initiation for those drawn to Mallt-y-Nos and wishing to begin a deliberate spiritual relationship with her.

At its heart is a question of pursuit: how do we continue towards something that matters when certainty cannot travel with us?

This initiation does not teach persistence at any cost. Mallt-y-Nos is too complicated a figure for that. Her surviving story holds both the fierce momentum of the hunt and the danger of a pursuit that can no longer be freely left.

To walk with her is therefore not simply to learn how to continue.

It is to remain conscious of what you pursue, why you pursue it, what it asks of you, and whether you are still choosing the hunt.

This Initiation May Suit You If

You feel persistently drawn to Mallt-y-Nos and want a grounded way to begin working with her.

You are undertaking work, study, craft, spiritual practice or another long pursuit whose outcome cannot be guaranteed in advance.

You find uncertainty more difficult to tolerate than effort itself and want to become steadier when the whole road cannot yet be seen.

You have considerable determination but want to understand more carefully where you place it.

You tend either to abandon worthwhile things when certainty disappears or to continue long after persistence has stopped being a conscious choice.

Or perhaps you are not seeking Mallt-y-Nos because something in your life needs fixing.

Sometimes a figure in folklore simply catches at the attention and does not readily release it. An initiation can provide a considered beginning from which to explore that interest without pretending to know beforehand what the relationship will become.

Mallt-y-Nos and the Night Hunt

Mallt-y-Nos — Mallt of the Night, often rendered in English as Matilda of the Night — belongs to the later layers of Welsh tradition surrounding the supernatural hunt.

Her traceable appearances are comparatively recent. In 1837, Taliesin Williams included Mallt-y-Nos in a poem in which she hunts alongside the hounds of Annwn. She subsequently became associated with the spectral hounds in Welsh literary tradition, and by the end of the nineteenth century stories explaining her place among them were being recorded in Glamorgan.

One later account remembers Mallt as a woman devoted passionately to hunting. She wishes to continue the hunt beyond death and finds herself caught within the very pursuit she had desired.

The story gives us no simple spiritual teacher.

I think that is part of what makes Mallt-y-Nos worth approaching.

She is associated with movement rather than stillness, pursuit rather than arrival, and a night in which the quarry always remains somewhere ahead.

Her story also refuses the easy lesson that perseverance is inherently virtuous.

There are times to follow.

There are times to endure.

There are times when we cannot know whether the road will reward us and must decide whether it matters enough to walk anyway.

And there are times when the pursuit itself needs to be questioned.

The person who learns to hunt must also remain capable of stopping.

The Cŵn Annwn

Mallt-y-Nos does not stand entirely alone in the tradition surrounding her.

She becomes associated with the Cŵn Annwn — the Hounds of Annwn — whose cries belong to a much broader body of Welsh folklore than Mallt's own surviving story.

Accounts describe supernatural hounds heard travelling through the night, sometimes more readily heard than seen. Historical sources do not give us one neat, unchanged system explaining their leader, quarry or meaning; those associations varied and were reshaped over time.

That uncertainty is worth preserving.

Within this initiation, the hounds are not reduced to symbols with a fixed list of spiritual correspondences. They remain part of the strange folkloric company in which Mallt-y-Nos comes down to us: movement heard in darkness, pursuit passing beyond sight, and something travelling onwards even when the observer cannot see where it goes.

The Initiation

Every Hunt Beyond Sight initiation is prepared individually.

Before the rite, I begin with your reasons for approaching Mallt-y-Nos and what, if anything, you are currently pursuing within your own life.

You do not need to arrive with a grand calling.

Your pursuit might be a craft you have chosen to learn slowly, a course of study, creative work, a business you are building, a spiritual practice you are tending, or simply the long work of becoming more deliberate about where your effort goes.

Nor do you need a pursuit at all.

If your reason for coming is simply Mallt-y-Nos herself, the initiation can begin there.

The rite establishes a first threshold of relationship through offering, acknowledgement and invitation. Mallt-y-Nos is approached with respect rather than commanded, and nothing within the initiation assumes that one ritual can tell either of us what an ongoing relationship with her must become.

The working instead establishes ground from which that relationship can be explored.

Within it, attention is given to pursuit and uncertainty: what calls you onwards, what happens when you cannot see the ending, and how you recognise the difference between chosen persistence and momentum that has begun carrying you.

The initiation closes not with a promise to follow endlessly, but with the freedom to continue listening.

After the Initiation

Initiation is a beginning, not proof that a permanent bond has been formed.

You may find that Mallt-y-Nos remains an important presence in your practice. Your interest may deepen slowly through reading, offering, reflection and attention.

You may instead discover that the initiation itself was the encounter you needed.

Neither outcome makes the work unsuccessful.

There is no requirement to make lifelong promises, maintain constant devotional practice, interpret ordinary events as signs, or force a sense of connection when none is present.

If you continue, I encourage a relationship built slowly.

Read the folklore.

Notice what draws you back.

Keep an account of dreams or impressions that genuinely feel worth remembering without assuming that every dream carries a message.

Make offerings because you wish to offer them, not because you fear what will happen if you stop.

And allow uncertainty to remain uncertainty.

The Discipline of the Hunt

A hunt concentrates attention.

Something has been chosen, and for a while the rest of the landscape falls away.

There can be value in that kind of commitment. Many things worth making, learning or tending require us to continue beyond the first enthusiasm and through periods when there is little reassurance that we are progressing at all.

But pursuit narrows vision as well as sharpening it.

Mallt-y-Nos carries both sides of that image.

Her folklore does not leave us with a comfortable patroness of determination. It gives us a woman remembered through a hunt that continues beyond ordinary limits.

For me, that makes restraint part of her path rather than its opposite.

The question is not merely:

Can I keep going when I cannot see the end?

It is also:

Can I remain awake enough to know whether I still choose what I am pursuing?

The night does not provide every answer.

It asks us to learn what can be known by the next step, what must remain beyond sight, and what is important enough that we are willing to move without certainty.

The rites I prepare are offered for spiritual practice, reflection and personal exploration. I cannot promise supernatural experiences, communication with Mallt-y-Nos, prophetic knowledge or a particular spiritual outcome.

Initiation also creates no obligation to continue working with Mallt-y-Nos afterwards. Whatever follows should develop through your own experience, judgement and choice.
