There are times when the difficulty is not that the road is closed, but that we have lost our sense of where we are standing.

Too many demands may be pulling in different directions. A period of change may have left old priorities behind without yet revealing what should replace them. Sometimes there is simply too much noise to hear which concern deserves attention first.

The Fair Wind is a personalised Welsh-inspired rite for those periods of scattering.

It is not intended to still every difficulty or provide an answer from outside yourself. Instead, I prepare the rite as a deliberate period of gathering and orientation: making space around what has become tangled, listening for what remains steady, and considering what direction feels possible from here.

About this rite

Wind occupies an intriguing place in Welsh folk tradition.

Nineteenth-century collections preserve accounts of people responding to the wind almost as though it could be addressed: leaving small offerings during storms, breathing wishes towards gentler winds, and seeking the help of cunning men and women who were reputed to procure favourable winds for sailors.

These accounts belong to folklore rather than to a single surviving system of Welsh ritual practice. I do not recreate them as though an intact historical ceremony has been handed down to us.

Instead, The Fair Wind takes their underlying relationship with weather seriously.

The wind cannot be held still. It alters the feel of a landscape without changing the land beneath it. It can obscure, clear, press against us or move past almost unnoticed.

Within this contemporary rite, that movement becomes a way of reflecting upon balance: not as perfect stillness, but as the ability to find one's bearing while circumstances continue to change.

The Fair Wind may suit you if you are seeking greater calm after a demanding or unsettled period, trying to separate competing priorities, reconsidering the balance between different parts of your life, or wanting to approach an important decision from a quieter place.

It may also be appropriate when you know that change is needed but do not yet want to force yourself towards a particular destination.

This is not primarily a road-opening rite. Its concern is the moment before that: recognising where you stand, what is pulling at you, and which direction deserves closer attention.

I prepare each Fair Wind rite individually around the circumstances you bring to me.

Both options include a complete personalised working for balance, clarity and orientation. Deluxe is intended for periods when several pressures, responsibilities or possible directions have become difficult to separate and you want greater space to explore them.

The Fair Wind — Standard Rite

Best suited when you can identify the area of life that feels scattered or out of balance and want a focused piece of ritual work around it.

Includes:

• Photographic record of the completed working
• Written account of the rite, materials and symbolism used

The ritual itself is my contemporary practice. Where I draw upon recorded Welsh wind lore, I distinguish that tradition from the elements I have developed for the rite today.

The Standard Rite is a complete working in its own right. It is best suited when the central need is already reasonably clear:

I know where life feels out of balance; I want space to find my bearings within it.

Best suited when the sense of imbalance is more layered than one immediate concern, or when several responsibilities, possibilities or directions have become difficult to separate.

Choose Deluxe when the difficulty is not one clearly identifiable source of imbalance, but several things pulling at once, and you want the rite to become the beginning of a longer reflective process rather than a single point of ritual attention.

Listening for the fair wind

Older Welsh accounts sometimes speak of fair and foul winds as things that could be sought, sold, wished for or released.

Whatever we make of such stories today, they preserve something worth noticing: people living close enough to weather that the direction of the wind mattered.

A favourable wind did not remove the sea or shorten the voyage. It changed the conditions in which the journey continued.

That is how I understand this rite.

Balance does not require life to become motionless. Sometimes it begins with enough quiet to notice what has been pushing against us, what is already passing, and where we might place our feet when we are ready to move again.

No physical item is shipped unless explicitly stated. Your ritual photographs and written materials are delivered digitally after the work is complete.

A working email address is required. I will contact you after ordering if I need further information before preparing your rite.
