There is a difference between loving someone and choosing what you will build together.

A relationship may contain affection, desire and years of shared history while still reaching a point at which something needs to be spoken more deliberately. Perhaps you are preparing for marriage or another commitment. Perhaps you have already built a life together and want to mark what that means. Perhaps circumstances have changed, and the promises that once seemed obvious deserve to be considered again.

The Chosen Bond is a personalised Welsh rite for two people who are consciously choosing one another.

It is not intended to persuade a reluctant partner, create romantic attachment, or influence another person's feelings without their participation.

Both people enter this work knowingly.

The rite creates a place in which to consider the bond you already share, the commitments you are willing to make, and the road you intend to walk together.

Rhiannon and the act of choosing

In the First Branch of the Mabinogi, Rhiannon does not wait passively to be chosen.

She comes to Pwyll and tells him plainly that she seeks him because she would rather marry him than the man to whom others intend to give her. She explains the circumstances and establishes how they might meet again.

Her story becomes considerably more complicated afterwards, encompassing marriage, loss, accusation, endurance and eventual restoration.

For this rite, however, I return to that first act.

Rhiannon chooses.

That makes her meaningful here not as a goddess who compels love or guarantees loyalty, but as a figure through whom we can consider sovereignty within relationship: the ability to offer devotion while remaining a person capable of choosing it.

The ritual I prepare is contemporary. I do not present it as an historical Welsh marriage ceremony or claim that medieval Welsh people performed devotional rites to Rhiannon for relationship commitment.

Her story provides the ground beneath the work.

This rite may suit you

The Chosen Bond is intended for an existing relationship in which both partners want to participate.

You might commission it to mark an engagement, marriage, anniversary, reconciliation that you have already mutually chosen, the decision to build a home or future together, or simply a point at which your relationship has become important enough that you want to acknowledge it deliberately.

It can also provide space for questions that romance sometimes allows us to avoid.

What are we actually promising one another?
What does commitment mean to each of us?
Where are we travelling in the same direction?
Where do we remain separate people?
What needs tending if this bond is to remain something we continue to choose rather than something we merely assume will endure?

Devotion need not erase sovereignty.

A shared road still has two people walking it.

The Working

I prepare each Chosen Bond rite around the relationship and commitment you wish to honour.

Both partners contribute to the personalisation of the working. This may include the history you share, what you value in one another, the commitment being marked, and anything you particularly want the rite to acknowledge.

An offering to Rhiannon forms part of the working, alongside symbolism chosen specifically for your relationship.

The purpose is not to bind two people magically together.

It is to give deliberate ritual form to a bond that both have already chosen.

The Chosen Bond — Standard Rite

Best suited when you both know the commitment you wish to mark and want a complete personalised rite centred upon your existing relationship and shared intentions.

Includes:

Choosing again

Commitment is sometimes spoken of as though one promise settles the matter forever.

Human relationships are rarely so simple.

Circumstances change. People change. What one person needs from partnership at twenty-five may not be identical to what they need at forty-five. A shared life accumulates ordinary pressures alongside its joys.

There is something valuable, then, in returning occasionally to the choice itself.

Not because the bond is weak.

Because it is alive.

The Chosen Bond does not attempt to make another person stay.

It honours something considerably more meaningful:

someone who is free to choose, choosing you—and you choosing them in return.

Before you order

The Chosen Bond is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item will be shipped.

Both partners must knowingly consent to participate in the rite. I will not perform this working to influence an unaware or unwilling person's feelings, romantic attachment or decision to remain in a relationship.

After ordering, you will be asked for information about both partners and the commitment you wish to mark. Photographs may be provided if you are comfortable doing so, but they are optional.

A working email address is required for communication and delivery.

Please allow 1–3 weeks for preparation and completion.

The rites I prepare are offered for spiritual practice and reflection. They cannot guarantee the continuation or outcome of a relationship and are not a substitute for relationship counselling or other appropriate professional support.

Because each rite is individually prepared, completed ritual work cannot be refunded once preparation and performance have taken place.
