There are times when confidence is not really the question.

You may know what matters to you and still find yourself hesitating when the decision is yours. You may be clear about a boundary until someone challenges it. You may spend so much time accounting for other people's expectations that your own authority begins to feel negotiable.

Stone of Sovereignty is a personalised Welsh rite concerned with recognising what is actually yours to decide.

It does not promise power over other people, nor does it ask you to become harder, louder or more dominant.

Instead, the rite creates a deliberate place from which to consider the limits and responsibilities of your own authority: your choices, your boundaries, your commitments, your words, and the ground you are willing to stand upon.

About this rite

Welsh history and tradition preserve many significant stones: inscribed monuments, boundary markers, civic stones, memorial stones and places around which later stories gathered.

What they do not give us is one clear, surviving Welsh system in which a magical “stone of sovereignty” conferred personal power.

I do not present this rite as though such a ceremony has been handed down to us.

The working is contemporary.

What I take from the wider Welsh relationship between stone, place and authority is something more grounded: a stone can mark where something begins, ends or belongs.

Within this rite, one ordinary stone becomes a physical focus for that question.

Not because the stone grants sovereignty.

Because it can mark the place from which you practise it.

Stone of Sovereignty may suit you if you are trying to become clearer about what belongs to your authority and what does not.

It may be useful when you are:

• establishing or defending a boundary;
• preparing to make a decision that others may not agree with;
• learning to speak more plainly about what you will and will not accept;
• carrying responsibilities that may no longer properly belong to you;
• rebuilding trust in your own judgement;
• or recognising that another person's feelings, choices and boundaries are not yours to govern.

The rite is not concerned with making every decision easier.

Some choices remain difficult even when they are clearly ours.

The work asks instead:

What is mine to decide?

What am I responsible for?

What am I not responsible for?

Where does my authority end?

And what changes when I stop treating another person's discomfort as proof that my boundary is wrong?

The Working

I prepare each Stone of Sovereignty rite individually around the circumstances you bring to me.

The working centres upon one ordinary stone, chosen for the rite and used as a marker of personal ground rather than as a magical object with fixed correspondences.

Your circumstances determine what that ground represents.

It may concern a relationship, a decision, your work, your home, your time, your body, your obligations or another area in which the limits of your authority have become unclear.

The rite then distinguishes between what belongs within that ground and what does not.

The purpose is not to withdraw from responsibility.

It is to place responsibility where it actually belongs.

Sovereignty can sound grand. In practice, it is often very ordinary and it may mean saying no without providing an elaborate defence.

Choosing differently from the people who raised you.
Allowing someone else to be disappointed.
Accepting that another person's choices are theirs, even when you wish they were different.
Taking responsibility for something you did rather than explaining it away.
Or recognising that carrying everything is not the same thing as being responsible.

Personal authority does not make us answerable to nobody; it asks us to become clearer about what we are actually answerable for.

The stone at the centre of this rite does not crown you. It does not make you powerful. It simply marks the ground.
