Creative silence can arrive for many reasons.

Sometimes the work has been pushed aside by practical demands until returning to it feels unexpectedly difficult. Sometimes ideas remain plentiful, but bringing any one of them into form becomes the obstacle. At other times, the pleasure of making has simply become tangled with expectation, judgement, or the pressure to produce something worthwhile.

Song of the Muse is a personalised rite centred upon awen — inspiration — and the Welsh story of Ceridwen's cauldron.

It does not promise to summon inspiration on command. Instead, the rite creates a deliberate space in which to return your attention to the act of making, to listen for what has become quiet, and to tend the conditions in which creative work may begin moving again.

About this rite

Awen has a long relationship with poetry and inspiration in Welsh language and tradition.

Its meaning has changed and accumulated additional associations over time, particularly through later bardic revival and modern spiritual practice. I therefore do not treat awen as a single ancient doctrine, nor as a goddess who can simply be invoked to provide ideas.

For this rite, I return particularly to the story of Ceridwen, Gwion Bach and Taliesin.

Ceridwen prepares a cauldron whose first three drops contain extraordinary knowledge and inspiration. Gwion receives them accidentally, beginning the extraordinary sequence of pursuit and transformation that eventually leads to the birth of Taliesin.

It is a complicated story rather than a simple myth about artistic inspiration, and I think that complexity is part of its value.

Creation also involves transformation. Something gathered inwardly eventually has to become something else: a thought into language, an image into form, a sound into music, an impulse into something that did not exist before.

Song of the Muse takes that movement as its starting point.

This rite may suit writers, artists, musicians, makers and other creative people who want to renew their relationship with their work.

You might come to it after a long creative silence, while struggling to choose between too many ideas, when self-consciousness has begun interfering with the process of making, or simply because you want to mark the beginning of a new piece of work.

You do not need to consider yourself an artist professionally.

The concern here is the act of creation itself: paying attention, allowing something to develop, and giving it form.

Tending the cauldron

One thing I particularly value about the story of Ceridwen's cauldron is how much work occurs before those three transformative drops appear.

The preparation takes a year and a day.

The cauldron must be tended. Ingredients are gathered. Gwion stirs while Morda tends the fire. Inspiration, when it finally comes, occupies only the smallest part of a much longer process.

There is something useful in that for anyone who creates.

Not every hour of creative work produces the sentence, image, melody or idea we were hoping for. Much of it is gathering, attempting, discarding, practising, waiting and returning.

That time is not necessarily empty.

Sometimes we are tending the cauldron.

Pan ddaw'r tawelwch, daw'r gân.
When silence comes, so too does the song.
