Shadow of the Nine - A Welsh Rite for Magical Discipline, Focus & Contained Power
What happens after you order
You will receive Your Rite Begins Here immediately after purchase, a short digital welcome guide explaining what happens next and how your personalised work is prepared. I will then contact you personally by email to learn about your current magical or spiritual practice, where it feels scattered or inconsistent, and what you want greater discipline to support.
You do not need a perfectly organised practice before ordering. You may work regularly but feel stretched across too many methods, return to things in bursts and then lose momentum, or simply want to become more deliberate about where your attention goes.
I will prepare the rite around the practice you actually have, rather than an idealised version of what you think it ought to be. Your completed photographs, written account and personal materials will then follow digitally within the stated preparation period.
When practice becomes scattered
It is easy to accumulate more magic than we can meaningfully tend.
A new method catches our attention. Another book is opened. A devotional practice begins. A divination system is added. We collect correspondences, rituals, prayers, charms, ideas and intentions until the difficulty is no longer finding something to do.
It is deciding what deserves to continue.
Shadow of the Nine is prepared for that point.
This is a rite of magical discipline: gathering attention, reducing unnecessary dispersal, strengthening consistency and becoming more deliberate about how you use the practices already available to you.
It is not concerned with becoming more powerful than other practitioners. It is concerned with becoming less scattered within your own work.
This rite may suit you if
You may be drawn to Shadow of the Nine if your magical or spiritual practice has become irregular, overextended or difficult to sustain.
Perhaps you begin practices enthusiastically and then abandon them when the first intensity passes. Perhaps you have accumulated too many methods and no longer know which ones genuinely belong to your path. You may feel drawn in several directions at once, constantly researching while rarely settling long enough to practise.
For others, the issue is energy rather than quantity.
You may give attention too readily to every impression, request, sign, possibility or new direction. You may want stronger habits around opening and closing spiritual work, clearer limits around how much you undertake, or a more disciplined relationship with the time and concentration your practice requires.
You may also simply want to renew your craft after a period of drift.
The aim is not austerity for its own sake.
A practice can remain curious, sensual, creative and alive while still having shape.
The Nine and the cauldron of Annwn
The Nine at the centre of this rite come from Preiddeu Annwfn — The Spoils of Annwn — preserved in the Book of Taliesin.
In the poem, Arthur’s expedition to Annwn encounters the cauldron of its chief. The text describes the cauldron as being kindled by the breath of nine maidens.
The surviving poem does not give us a detailed order of nine magical teachers, nor a complete system of initiation built around them.
What it gives us is a striking image: nine figures gathered around a cauldron, breath tending heat, something powerful requiring continued attention rather than a single dramatic moment.
That is the image I return to here.
Nine presences around a vessel that must be tended.
For Shadow of the Nine, the cauldron becomes a way of thinking about practice itself.
What are you feeding?
What are you neglecting?
What has been allowed to burn too hot?
What has gone cold because your attention was divided elsewhere?
And what deserves the steadiness of being tended again?
The Working
Before preparing the rite, I begin with your existing practice.
We may look at what you already do, what you repeatedly return to, what keeps falling away, what you have taken on out of obligation rather than genuine commitment, and where your attention is being spent without giving much back.
The rite is then shaped around gathering rather than expansion.
The Nine are honoured through the image preserved in Preiddeu Annwfn, while the working focuses upon the part of your practice that most needs steadiness: concentration, repetition, ritual boundaries, consistency, restraint, or the decision to stop feeding something that no longer belongs.
A flame, vessel, mirror, stone or another simple focus may be used where appropriate, but the materials are secondary.
The centre of the work is attention.
Where it goes, what holds it, and what happens when you choose not to scatter it.
Standard — Shadow of the Nine
The Standard Rite is best suited when you can identify one principal area of your practice that needs greater discipline or focus.
It includes:
- personal consultation by email before preparation begins;
- a personalised Welsh-inspired rite centred on magical discipline and gathered attention;
- honouring of the Nine Maidens through the Preiddeu Annwfn material;
- a main working shaped around focus, consistency, restraint or practice boundaries;
- a photographic record of the completed rite;
- a written account of the work and symbolism used;
- a personalised continuing practice for strengthening consistency afterwards;
- a Welsh-and-English closing reflection prepared for your work.
Standard may suit you if the issue is reasonably clear: maintaining one devotional practice, returning to regular divination, becoming more consistent with spellwork, reducing overextension, or creating firmer boundaries around spiritual work.
Deluxe — The Tended Cauldron
The Deluxe Rite is intended for a practice that has become more deeply fragmented or where discipline is entangled with several habits at once.
It includes everything in Standard, plus:
- an extended personal consultation about the shape of your current practice;
- a separate preparatory clearing rite before the main working;
- expanded personalisation around the practices, commitments and distractions you are carrying;
- a more detailed written account of the completed rite;
- an expanded Companion Guide exploring Preiddeu Annwfn, the Nine, the cauldron image, attention and the work of tending a practice over time;
- a personalised Welsh-and-English prayer or invocation for continued practice;
- a tailored structure for deciding what to continue, pause, deepen or release;
- journal prompts around discipline, curiosity, obligation and spiritual overextension;
- one follow-up exchange after you have had time to work with the new structure.
Choose Deluxe when the problem is not simply “I need to practise more regularly,” but “I need to understand what my practice is becoming and what actually deserves my attention.”
Discipline is not punishment
Spiritual discipline is sometimes imagined as severity.
More rules. More deprivation. More proof that we are serious.
I do not find that particularly useful.
Discipline can be much quieter.
Returning to the same prayer instead of constantly searching for a better one.
Finishing a period of study before beginning three more.
Closing a rite deliberately instead of leaving yourself indefinitely open to whatever comes next.
Accepting that not every interesting practice needs to become yours.
Keeping one commitment because you chose it carefully.
And allowing something else to remain untended because it no longer deserves the fuel.
The point is not to make your practice smaller for the sake of control.
It is to give enough of yourself to what matters that it can actually deepen.
Before You Order
Shadow of the Nine is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item will be shipped.
Please allow 1–3 weeks once I have the information needed to begin. I will contact you using the email address supplied with your order, and your photographs and written materials will be delivered digitally following completion.
You do not need to follow a particular magical tradition, maintain a daily practice, or already consider yourself experienced.
This rite is most useful when there is already something present to work with: a developing spiritual practice, magical craft, devotional relationship, divinatory discipline, creative ritual practice, or another form of ongoing work that you want to tend more deliberately.
It is not an initiation into a historical order of Nine Maidens, nor does it confer lineage, status or magical rank.
The work begins with something more ordinary.
What are you willing to keep tending?
Cadw'r tân. Cadw'r gwaith.
Keep the fire. Keep the work.
May what deserves your attention receive it, what scatters you loosen its hold, and the work you choose to keep be tended with steadiness.
