Offrwm yr Afon - A Welsh River Offering for Release, Closure & Moving Forward
What happens after you order
You will receive Your Rite Begins Here immediately after purchase, a short digital welcome guide explaining what happens next and how your personalised work is prepared. I will then contact you personally by email to gather whatever information is needed before I begin. Your completed rite, photographs and written materials will follow digitally within the stated preparation period.
Offrwm yr Afon
Some things are easier to name than to put down.
You may know that a relationship, experience, grief, old hope, attachment or difficult period has reached the point where you no longer want to carry it in quite the same way. You may feel stuck around something that has already ended, or simply know that you need a deliberate act of movement when your own circumstances have made one difficult to create.
Offrwm yr Afon — The River Offering — is a personalised rite in which I take your intention to moving water and perform the work there on your behalf.
The river is not used merely as a symbol in an indoor ritual. I physically carry the intention to the water, prepare the rite beside it, and allow the movement of the current to become part of the working itself.
This is a rite for the moment when the request is simple: Take this to the river for me.
This rite may suit you if
You may come to Offrwm yr Afon because there is something you are ready to release, but ordinary reflection has not given that decision enough weight.
Perhaps a relationship has ended while part of you remains caught in its aftermath. Perhaps grief, regret, disappointment or an old expectation continues to occupy more room than you want to give it. You may have been waiting for closure that another person cannot provide, or carrying something whose importance you do not wish to deny even though you no longer want it held so closely.
The rite may also suit you if you feel stagnant rather than specifically burdened. There may be no dramatic ending at all, only the sense that something has stopped moving and you want to mark a change in direction.
For some people, the reason is practical. You may not live near suitable moving water, may be unable to reach it yourself, or may simply prefer to place the work into another pair of hands.
You do not need to be certain whether what you are releasing is emotional, spiritual, energetic or symbolic.
Tell me what you believe you are carrying and what you want the river to take onwards.
That is enough to begin.
Welsh grounding
Water runs through Welsh landscape and story so thoroughly that separating one from the other is difficult.
Rivers mark valleys, boundaries and routes through the land. They carry weather from the hills towards the sea, cut their way through rock, gather smaller streams and continue beyond the places where we first meet them. Welsh folklore and literature repeatedly place significance around wells, rivers, lakes, crossings and the movement between one shore and another.
I do not present Offrwm yr Afon as a reconstruction of one surviving historical Welsh river-release ceremony.
The rite is contemporary.
Its Welsh grounding lies instead in relationship with landscape: approaching moving water as something with presence, history and direction rather than treating it as a decorative magical correspondence.
A river does not make a judgement about what it carries. It receives what reaches it, changes around obstacles, and continues.
That quality is at the centre of the work.
There is also room, where appropriate to the individual commission, to draw upon Welsh figures whose surviving stories genuinely belong beside water. Dylan ail Don may be relevant to someone whose work concerns movement, belonging or return to an element that feels more natural. Other figures may be honoured where their stories genuinely fit the intention.
No fixed group of deities is imposed upon every rite.
Sometimes the river is enough.
The Working
Before I prepare the rite, I will ask what you want taken to the water and what you hope the act of release will mean.
You do not need to send a long account, unless you wish to.
A name, a relationship, a period of life, a recurring thought, a grief, a fear, an attachment, a hope you are finally ready to stop waiting upon, or simply a few sentences about what feels stuck may be enough.
I then prepare the working around that intention and take it to suitable moving water.
The rite itself is shaped around three movements: acknowledging what has been carried, placing it deliberately into relationship with the river, and allowing the work to continue beyond the point where I leave the bank.
What is physically used will depend upon the rite and the water itself. I will not leave harmful materials, litter, wax, plastic, salt, unsuitable herbs or other damaging substances in the river. Where a symbolic object is used, it may be held above the water, washed, dipped, removed again, or represented through another form of offering that does not burden the landscape.
Your intention does not need to become rubbish in order to be released.
What matters is that it has been brought there deliberately.
The rite closes beside the water, but the image behind it is continuation.
The current carries on after I have turned towards home.
Standard — Offrwm yr Afon
The Standard Rite is best suited when you have one clear matter you want carried into movement or release.
It includes:
- personal consultation by email before the working;
- preparation of a personalised river rite around your intention;
- travel to suitable moving water and performance of the rite there on your behalf;
- a respectful offering or symbolic act appropriate to the individual working and landscape;
- photographs documenting the completed rite;
- a written account of what was prepared and how the working was shaped;
- a personalised reflection for the period after release;
- a Welsh-and-English closing blessing prepared for your rite.
The Standard Rite is complete in itself.
It is for the person who knows, broadly or precisely, what they want taken to the river and wants a meaningful act to mark that movement.
Deluxe — The River Beyond the Bend
The Deluxe version is intended for circumstances in which release is only one part of a more complicated transition.
It may suit you if what you are carrying has several layers, if the ending has been difficult to understand, or if you want more support considering what should be released and what should remain with you.
Deluxe includes everything in the Standard Rite, plus:
- a longer personal consultation before I prepare the working;
- a separate preliminary cleansing or preparation rite;
- expanded personalisation of the river working;
- a more detailed written account of the completed rite;
- an expanded Companion Guide exploring release, movement, closure and the Welsh relationship with water and landscape;
- personalised journal prompts for distinguishing what is ending from what still belongs to you;
- a continuing water-based practice that can be used at home without requiring access to a river;
- a personal Welsh-and-English invocation or prayer for use afterwards;
- one follow-up exchange after you have had time to live with what the rite marked.
Choose Deluxe when the question is not only, “What do I want the river to take?” but also, “What remains mine when it has gone?”
What the river does not take
Release can easily be confused with erasure.
That is not what I ask of the river.
If you loved someone, the rite does not require you to decide that the love was meaningless. If something hurt you, you do not need to pretend that it no longer matters. If a period of life changed you, letting part of it go does not mean returning to the person you were before it happened.
Some things can leave our keeping without leaving our history.
A river carries what enters it onwards, but it also changes the land through which it passes.
Both things can be true.
The purpose of Offrwm yr Afon is therefore not to make the past disappear. It is to mark a change in how closely you intend to continue carrying it.
Sometimes the most useful image is not an empty hand. It is watching the water move beyond the bend and knowing that you do not have to follow everything you have released.
Before You Order
Offrwm yr Afon is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item is shipped to you unless a product page explicitly states otherwise.
The rite is performed at suitable moving water chosen with safety, access and respect for the landscape in mind. Because outdoor conditions can change, I may adjust the exact timing or location of the working rather than perform it in unsafe weather or unsuitable water conditions.
Please provide a working email address with your order. I will contact you there before preparing the rite, and your photographs and written materials will be delivered digitally afterwards.
Once I have the information needed to begin, please allow 1–3 weeks for preparation and completion.
You do not need to know exactly how to describe what you want released. We can begin with your own understanding of what has become difficult to carry.
Gad i'r afon gario'r hyn nad oes raid i mi ei ddal mwyach.
Let the river carry what I no longer need to hold.
May what has reached its ending be allowed to move, what remains yours stay beside you, and the road ahead gain a little more room.
