There are times when we know what we want to say, yet the words change before they ever leave us.

We soften them. Rehearse them. Explain too much. Decide that now is not the right moment. Imagine the response before anything has been spoken. Sometimes this is wisdom; communication asks us to consider other people. At other times, we become so accustomed to anticipating how we will be received that our own meaning gradually disappears from what we say.

In Her Own Words is a personalised rite developed in conversation with Blodeuwedd's story in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi. It is intended for those who want to examine their relationship with speaking, withholding, explaining, creating, and being heard.

It does not promise eloquence, persuasion, or a particular response from another person. Instead, the work asks something quieter:

What changes when you allow yourself to know what you mean before deciding how to say it?

Blodeuwedd and the Question of Voice

Blodeuwedd enters the Fourth Branch through the decisions of others.

After Lleu Llaw Gyffes is prevented by his mother, Arianrhod, from having a human wife, Math and Gwydion fashion a woman from flowers for him. She is created for a role already waiting for her and given the name Blodeuwedd.

Yet the woman who follows is not without speech or agency.

Blodeuwedd meets Gronw Pebr and forms a relationship with him. She speaks with Lleu and learns from him the extraordinary circumstances under which he might be killed. She and Gronw then act upon that knowledge, with disastrous consequences.

I do not treat this as a simple story of finding one's voice, nor turn Blodeuwedd's choices into a modern tale of uncomplicated empowerment. Deception, attempted murder, punishment and transformation remain part of the Fourth Branch.

What her story does offer is a more difficult question: what happens when someone who has been assigned a place in another person's story begins to act and speak from desires of her own?

This rite begins there.

The Work

Before preparing the rite, I will ask you about the circumstances that have brought you to it.

There may be one particular conversation you are struggling to have. You may find yourself habitually apologising before expressing an opinion, changing what you mean to avoid disagreement, or remaining silent until frustration has already taken root. Perhaps your difficulty lies somewhere else entirely: sharing creative work, contributing in groups, stating what you need, or allowing your own preferences to take up ordinary space.

We will also consider silence.

Not every thought needs to be spoken. Privacy is not failure. Refusing to explain yourself can sometimes be a boundary rather than an absence of courage.

The purpose is therefore not to make you speak more.

It is to begin recognising the difference between silence you have chosen and silence you have slipped into because speaking feels too difficult.

I prepare the rite individually from what you share with me, drawing on imagery and questions arising from Blodeuwedd's story without presenting her as a traditional Welsh goddess of communication or claiming that the medieval tale describes this modern practice.

Three Questions at the Centre

The rite is shaped around three movements.

What do you want to say?

Before politeness, anticipation, fear or explanation alter it, we look at the underlying meaning. This does not mean that the first words which occur to us are necessarily the wisest ones. It simply gives us somewhere honest from which to begin.

What happens before you say it?

We notice the space between knowing and speaking: rehearsing, softening, apologising, abandoning, delaying, over-explaining, or imagining another person's response.

Some of those habits may serve you. Others may no longer do so.

What belongs to you once the words have been spoken?

You can choose your words, timing and manner. You can listen when someone answers and reconsider what you have said.

You cannot entirely control what another person understands, feels, accepts or does.

Learning where your responsibility ends is part of the work.

Who This Rite May Suit

This rite may be useful if you are working with difficulty expressing needs or preferences, fear of being misunderstood, habitual self-editing, creative inhibition, nervousness around important conversations, or uncertainty about when to speak and when to remain silent.

It may also suit someone drawn specifically to Blodeuwedd whose interest lies in questions of agency rather than beauty or transformation.

It is not intended to make another person listen, agree, forgive, respond, or change their behaviour.

• An expanded personalised working incorporating the particular patterns of speech, silence or self-editing identified through your consultation.
• The Unsaid — a separate preparatory reflection exploring words repeatedly withheld, abandoned or altered and what those choices may have been protecting.
• An expanded written account of the completed rite.
• An expanded Companion Guide with additional exercises for preparing difficult conversations, creative expression, deliberate silence, and reflecting afterwards without endlessly rewriting what you wish you had said.
• A follow-up exchange after you have had time to sit with the work.

A Note on Blodeuwedd

This is a contemporary spiritual and reflective rite. I do not claim that In Her Own Words reconstructs a historical Welsh practice, nor that medieval Welsh tradition identifies Blodeuwedd as a goddess of voice, communication or self-expression.

The Fourth Branch is stranger and less comfortable than that.

Blodeuwedd is made for someone else, develops desires that conflict with the role for which she was created, participates in deception and violence, and is ultimately transformed by Gwydion. Her agency does not make every choice she makes admirable.

That complexity is part of why I find her interesting.

Having a voice and using it wisely are not the same thing.

The rite leaves room for both.

After the Rite

There may be no dramatic moment when speaking suddenly becomes easy.

Instead, you may begin to notice smaller thresholds: the apology you almost added before an ordinary request; the opinion you nearly swallowed; the explanation that was not actually necessary; or, equally, the moment when you realise that saying nothing is genuinely what you want.

Those moments are part of the practice.

The aim is not to become louder.

It is to become more familiar with the voice that is already yours.
