There are times when what happened to us, what others have said about us, and what we know of ourselves become difficult to separate.

A judgement may linger long after the moment that created it. An old accusation can remain painfully close even when years have passed, while the life beyond it seems much farther away. Sometimes the exhaustion comes not only from what happened, but from the effort of trying to correct every misunderstanding or make ourselves understood by someone unwilling to listen.

Feather of Rhiannon is a personalised contemporary rite inspired by Rhiannon's stories in the Mabinogi, particularly her endurance through injustice, her eventual restoration, and the strange song of the Birds of Rhiannon.

It is intended as a quiet place from which to consider what remains yours when other people's understanding of you cannot be controlled: your own account of yourself, your choices, your dignity, and the road you take from here.

About Rhiannon

Rhiannon enters the First Branch of the Mabinogi as a woman riding slowly and steadily past the mound at Arberth.

Pwyll sends a man after her, but however quickly he rides, he cannot reach her. A faster horse fares no better. Eventually Pwyll himself pursues her, exhausting his horse without closing the distance.

Only when he calls to her and asks her to stop does she do so.

Rhiannon is no passive figure waiting to be claimed. She explains that she has come because she wishes to marry Pwyll rather than Gwawl, the man chosen for her, and much of what follows depends upon her intelligence when Pwyll's own judgement fails him.

Her story later becomes considerably darker.

After the birth of her son, the child disappears while the women responsible for watching him sleep. Fearing punishment, they falsely accuse Rhiannon of killing him.

She is subjected to a humiliating penance and made to tell strangers what she is believed to have done.

Eventually the child is returned. He is recognised as Rhiannon's son, later named Pryderi, and Rhiannon is released from her punishment.

Her story does not make hardship beautiful, nor does it suggest that injustice is necessary for growth. What it gives us is a figure whose identity survives what others falsely place upon her.

That is the part of Rhiannon's road this rite approaches.

The Feather and the Song

The feather used in this rite is not a historically attested symbol of Rhiannon.

It is a contemporary ritual symbol I use in reference to the Birds of Rhiannon, whose extraordinary song appears elsewhere in the medieval Welsh tales.

In the Second Branch of the Mabinogi, their singing alters the listeners' ordinary sense of distance: what is far away can seem close, while what is near can seem distant. Those who hear them remain listening for a period that feels much shorter than the years that have actually passed.

Feather of Rhiannon takes that strange quality as a point of reflection rather than claiming a historical magical correspondence.

Our own experience of distance can change after difficult events.

Something long past may continue to feel immediate. A judgement made by someone else can sit closer than our own understanding of ourselves. Meanwhile, the possibility of life beyond what happened can feel frustratingly remote.

The rite asks what might change if those distances are allowed to move.

Not because the past can be erased, but because it does not always have to remain the closest thing to us.

This Rite May Suit You If

This work may suit you if you have come through a period of criticism, misunderstanding or unfair judgement and find that its effects have lasted longer than the circumstances themselves.

It may also be appropriate when you have spent considerable energy trying to explain yourself, repair another person's opinion of you, or obtain an acknowledgement that may never come.

For others, the need is quieter. There may have been no single accusation or conflict, only a difficult period that has gradually made confidence in your own judgement harder to access.

Feather of Rhiannon does not attempt to change another person's mind, compel an apology, reveal who was right, or promise eventual vindication.

Instead, it creates space to ask a different question:

What remains true about you even if someone else never understands it?

The Working

I prepare each Feather of Rhiannon rite individually, shaped around what you choose to share with me and what you hope to begin restoring.

The working is intentionally restrained.

A single ethically obtained feather forms part of the rite as a contemporary reference to the Birds of Rhiannon. Alongside it are only the materials needed for the particular working, which may include a bowl of water, a candle and the written intention prepared for you.

One part of the rite works deliberately with distance.

What you have been carrying is acknowledged rather than pushed away. Its place in your experience is recognised, but the working does not leave it at the centre indefinitely.

Drawing upon the imagery of the Birds of Rhiannon, the rite explores what it means to allow something that has remained painfully close to sit farther away, while bringing your own understanding, choices and present life nearer again.

Rhiannon is honoured and invited into the working with respect. I do not command her presence, nor will I claim that a particular occurrence during the rite proves that she has appeared or delivered a message.

The purpose is not to rewrite what happened.

It is to begin changing how much of the road it is permitted to occupy.

Rhiannon's first appearance offers an interesting image to carry alongside this work. Pwyll cannot reach her by riding faster. The pursuit ends only when he stops trying to overcome the distance through speed and speaks.

I do not present that episode as a hidden medieval teaching about modern relationships. It is simply one way the story can invite reflection now.

There are circumstances in which moving forward does not begin with trying harder to be understood.

It begins when another person's understanding is no longer allowed to determine whether you may continue.

Restoration Is Not Forgetting

This rite is not intended to make difficult experiences seem insignificant.

Moving something farther away does not mean pretending it never happened. Neither does self-trust require deciding that we have always been right.

Reflection may reveal places where we would now choose differently. There can be accountability without allowing a mistake to become an entire identity, just as there can be confidence in our own account without requiring everyone else to accept it.

Restoration is quieter than absolution.

It is the gradual recognition that the road continues beyond the place where something difficult happened.
