Ceridwen's story begins with an act of preparation.

She sets a cauldron to boil for a year and a day, intending its extraordinary contents for her son Afagddu. Gwion Bach is given the task of tending it. Three drops fall where they were never intended to fall, and from that accident comes knowledge, pursuit, transformation and, eventually, Taliesin.

It is tempting to turn this into a simple story about inspiration or personal rebirth.

It is considerably stranger than that.

Ceridwen's Cauldron is a personalised Welsh initiation for those who feel drawn towards Ceridwen and want to begin approaching her deliberately through the story that has come down to us.

The initiation does not promise transformation, confer awen, or bind you permanently to Ceridwen.

It marks a beginning.

Awen — inspiration, poetic insight, the flowing gift.

About this initiation

Ceridwen belongs to the Welsh tradition surrounding the legendary poet Taliesin.

In the best-known version of the tale, she prepares a cauldron for her son Afagddu, whose appearance is described harshly in the surviving story. From the cauldron, three drops are to emerge containing extraordinary knowledge; everything else within the mixture will be poisonous.

For a year and a day, Gwion Bach stirs while the blind Morda tends the fire.

Then the intended order breaks.

The three drops fall upon Gwion. He receives their knowledge, understands immediately that Ceridwen will pursue him, and flees.

What follows is a sequence of transformations. Gwion becomes a hare and Ceridwen a greyhound; he becomes a fish and she an otter; he becomes a bird and she a hawk. Finally, he becomes a grain of wheat and Ceridwen becomes a hen and consumes him.

She later gives birth to him.

Unable to kill the child, she sets him upon the water, and the story continues towards the figure who will become Taliesin.

There is inspiration here. There is also anger, intention, accident, pursuit, knowledge, consequence and transformation.

I think Ceridwen deserves to be approached with all of that intact.

I do not present this initiation as a reconstruction of an historical ceremony devoted to Ceridwen. The rite I prepare is contemporary, developed in conversation with the Welsh material that survives.

What this initiation explores

Ceridwen's Cauldron may suit you if you have felt drawn towards Ceridwen and want a structured beginning to working with her.

You may come through an interest in awen, poetry, knowledge or creative practice. You may be drawn to the transformations within her story, or to the cauldron and the extraordinary amount of preparation that precedes those three drops.

You do not need to decide beforehand precisely what Ceridwen will mean within your practice.

That is part of what beginning a relationship allows you to explore.

Rather than assigning her a fixed role as a goddess of transformation, witchcraft, rebirth or creativity, the initiation gives you somewhere to begin encountering the figure within her Welsh tradition and considering what aspects of that story continue to hold your attention.

What are you willing to tend patiently?

What happens when knowledge changes the person who receives it?

What is transformed by choice, and what by circumstances we did not choose?

What do we do when something we carefully prepared develops differently from what we intended?

And what might awen ask of us beyond simply wanting to receive it?

Tending the cauldron

The part of Ceridwen's story I return to most often happens before the transformations begin.

The cauldron takes a year and a day.

Whatever else we make of the tale, its extraordinary knowledge does not appear from nowhere. Something has been prepared. A fire has been tended. Someone has remained beside the vessel while time passes.

And after all of that preparation, events still do not unfold according to plan.

There is something worth carrying into a relationship with Ceridwen there.

Practice can be tended without knowing precisely what it will become.

Study does not have to produce immediate certainty. Devotion does not guarantee revelation. Awen cannot be reduced to inspiration arriving conveniently when summoned.

Sometimes the work is simply to keep returning.

To read again.

To notice something missed before.

To make an offering without demanding an answer in return.

To tend the cauldron without pretending we already know what its three drops will contain.

An initiation marks the beginning of that attention.

What develops from it remains a relationship rather than a promise.

Continuing after the initiation

You are not required to maintain a permanent devotional relationship with Ceridwen after this initiation.

The practices provided afterwards are intended to give you ways of continuing if that relationship remains meaningful: through offerings, study, creative or reflective practice, and returning to the Welsh material itself.

Over time, your practice may deepen, change shape or become quieter.

None of those outcomes means that the initiation has failed.

A beginning does not dictate everything that must follow it.
