There are times when we do not lack information.

We have thought about the question from several directions. We may have asked other people, drawn cards, written lists, watched for patterns, or returned to the same possibilities often enough that each one has begun to sound equally convincing.

What becomes difficult is knowing what deserves our attention.

The Three Drops is a personalised Welsh rite centred upon divination, discernment and the difficult work of interpreting what we find.

It draws upon the story of Ceridwen, Gwion Bach and the cauldron prepared for Afagddu: a story in which extraordinary knowledge is sought deliberately, received unexpectedly, and followed by consequences no one originally intended.

The rite does not promise prophecy, clairvoyance or access to infallible supernatural guidance.

Instead, it creates a deliberate space in which to approach a question, undertake divinatory work, and consider carefully what the resulting symbols may — and may not — be telling us.

About this rite

In the story associated with Taliesin, Ceridwen prepares a cauldron for her son Afagddu.

The preparation is considerable. The mixture must boil for a year and a day, until three drops containing extraordinary knowledge emerge. Gwion Bach is set to stir the cauldron while Morda tends the fire.

But the knowledge does not reach the person for whom it was intended.

The three drops fall upon Gwion's thumb. He puts it into his mouth and receives what Ceridwen had prepared for another.

What follows is not peaceful enlightenment.

Gwion immediately understands the danger he is in and flees. Ceridwen pursues him through a sequence of transformations, and the story eventually carries both figures somewhere neither occupied when the cauldron was first set upon the fire.

There is something important here for divinatory practice.

Knowledge does not necessarily make circumstances simple.

An answer can change the question. What we learn may require interpretation. Sometimes what becomes visible is precisely what we would rather not have seen.

The Three Drops takes that tension seriously.

The ritual I prepare is contemporary. I do not present Ceridwen's cauldron as an historical Welsh scrying vessel or claim that medieval Welsh tradition gives us a surviving system of Ceridwen-based divination.

Her story provides the ground beneath the work.

The Three Drops may suit you when you are seeking greater clarity around a question, decision or period of uncertainty and want divination to form a substantial part of the ritual work.

It may also suit someone developing their own relationship with tarot, scrying, dream material or another reflective divinatory practice who wants to become more attentive to interpretation rather than prediction.

The concern is not learning to treat every coincidence as a message.

Quite the opposite.

This work asks how we distinguish a useful symbol from the meaning we desperately want it to have; how intuition and expectation can become entangled; and how we can remain open to what emerges without surrendering our judgement to it.

Divination can offer another perspective.

It does not relieve us of the responsibility to decide what we do with what we find.

After the three drops

The three drops from Ceridwen's cauldron contain extraordinary knowledge.

Yet receiving them does not give Gwion a quiet or uncomplicated future.

The first thing his new knowledge shows him is that he needs to run.

I find that considerably more interesting than treating the cauldron as a simple source of spiritual answers.

Sometimes clarity reassures us.

Sometimes it complicates matters.

Sometimes divination confirms something we had already suspected, and sometimes it places an unexpected possibility beside the story we had been telling ourselves.

None of these responses makes the symbol an instruction.

We still have to interpret. We still have to choose. We still have to live beyond the moment in which the cards were turned, the dream remembered, or the pattern noticed.

Three drops may change what can be seen.

They do not decide what happens next.
