Perhaps you are the dependable one, the capable one, the beautiful one, the difficult one, the person who always copes. Perhaps your work has become the first thing people know about you, or a role within your family has grown so familiar that it seems to arrive in the room before you do.

Sometimes these descriptions are affectionate. Sometimes they are earned. Some may even be parts of ourselves that we value deeply.

But none of them is the whole person.

Beyond the Fairest is a personalised Welsh rite with Creirwy for exploring the space between how you are perceived and how you understand yourself.

It is not about rejecting the identities you already carry. Instead, the work asks what else is present when familiar descriptions are allowed to loosen their hold.

About Creirwy

Creirwy, whose name also appears as Creirfyw, is a comparatively elusive figure within Welsh tradition.

She is associated with Ceridwen and appears in later versions of the story surrounding Ceridwen, Gwion Bach and Taliesin as Ceridwen's daughter and the sister of Afagddu.

Elsewhere, Creirwy is remembered particularly for her beauty. She is named among the Three Fair Maidens of the Island of Britain, and medieval Welsh poetry preserves references to the passion of Garwy Hir for her.

It is a curious kind of survival.

Creirwy remained memorable enough for her beauty to become proverbial, yet comparatively little of her own story has come down to us. We encounter her through descriptions, relationships and the impressions she made upon others far more readily than we encounter a voice that is recognisably her own.

That absence leaves room for a question that feels surprisingly contemporary.

What remains when the things other people know about us are no longer enough to describe who we are?

That question sits at the centre of this rite.

There is nothing inherently wrong with being known as beautiful, clever, strong, kind, successful, reliable or generous.

The question is what happens when being valued for one part of yourself makes the rest increasingly difficult to see.

This rite creates room to notice those other parts.

Not to discover a hidden “true self” beneath everything else, but to recognise that a person can contain more than one honest description.

Creirwy is honoured within the working, not as a figure who dictates who you should become, but as the Welsh presence around whom these questions of perception and identity are gathered.

The rite begins with the descriptions that already surround you.

Some may have been given by other people. Others may be names you have learned to give yourself. We consider which still belong, which have become restrictive, and which may be perfectly true while nevertheless being incomplete.

The work then turns towards what receives less attention: qualities, wants, contradictions, interests and ways of being that have been crowded out by the more familiar story.

The aim is not to exchange one label for another.

It is to make the story larger.

Creirwy comes down to us through fragments. Her beauty remained memorable; much else became difficult to see.
