Some obstacles yield to persistence. Others ask us to notice that we have been trying the same door for too long.

Another Way Through is a personalised initiation with Gwydion fab Dôn, one of the most ingenious and morally complicated figures of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi. Across his stories, circumstances that appear fixed rarely remain so for long. Gwydion bargains, disguises, names, makes, transforms, speaks and devises another possibility.

Yet ingenuity is not automatically wisdom. Some of his cleverest actions cause considerable harm, and the stories do not allow their consequences simply to disappear.

This initiation begins within that tension. It is a threshold for those drawn to Gwydion and to a practice of language, imagination, adaptability and transformative craft, while asking a question that cleverness alone cannot answer:

If I can find another way through, what happens if I take it?

Ffordd arall sydd weithiau pan na welwn hi eto.
Sometimes there is another way, though we cannot yet see it.

What This Initiation Marks

This is a contemporary personal initiation centred upon Gwydion. It does not recreate a historically attested initiation, priesthood or devotional lineage associated with him.

Instead, the rite marks a deliberate beginning, renewal or deepening of your own relationship with Gwydion and with the questions his stories can bring into magical practice.

That may mean exploring how you respond when circumstances resist you. It may involve language and storytelling, creative work, problem-solving, adaptation, magical practice, or the tendency to look for possibilities where the obvious route has closed.

The initiation does not grant Gwydion's abilities, guarantee his presence, or establish a binding relationship with him.

It opens a conversation.

What follows is something you continue to build.

Gwydion in Welsh Tradition

Gwydion fab Dôn appears most substantially in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, where ingenuity and consequence repeatedly accompany one another.

When Gwydion and his brother Gilfaethwy seek the pigs belonging to Pryderi, Gwydion devises an exchange using horses, hounds, shields and other things produced through magic. The deception contributes to conflict and ultimately to Pryderi's death. The brothers' actions surrounding Goewin later bring punishment from Math, who transforms them successively into pairs of deer, boar and wolves.

Elsewhere in the Branch, Gwydion's ingenuity is turned towards Lleu Llaw Gyffes.

He discovers and raises the child, then finds ways around Arianrhod's declarations that the boy should receive neither a name nor arms from her. Later, after Lleu has been attacked and transformed, Gwydion searches for him and helps restore him.

With Math, he also participates in the creation of Blodeuwedd from flowers when Arianrhod has declared that Lleu will have no wife from the race of people then living.

These are not stories in which cleverness can be neatly labelled good or bad.

Gwydion can be inventive, manipulative, persistent, caring, destructive and remarkably resourceful. Rather than smoothing those contradictions away, this initiation keeps them present.

They make the questions more useful.

Another Way Through

At the centre of this initiation is the practice of looking again.

When something appears fixed, the first question is not necessarily How do I force this to move?

It may be:

What have I assumed about the problem?

Perhaps the available materials can be used differently. Perhaps the language surrounding the situation is shaping what appears possible. Perhaps an obstacle really is an obstacle, but there is another direction from which it can be approached.

Sometimes ingenuity means making.

Sometimes it means speaking differently.

Sometimes it means adapting to circumstances we cannot alter.

And sometimes the clever solution is available but should not be used.

The ability to find another way does not remove the responsibility to consider where that way leads.

Who It’s For

This initiation may suit you if you feel particularly drawn to Gwydion and want to mark the beginning or deepening of that relationship.

It may also speak to writers, artists, storytellers and other makers; those whose work depends upon language or creative problem-solving; practitioners interested in adaptability and improvisation; or anyone examining how they respond when the expected route is no longer available.

You do not need an established devotional relationship with Gwydion before beginning.

Nor do you need to regard every action he takes in the Mabinogi as admirable in order to work thoughtfully with his stories.

Ambivalence is allowed.

Preparing Your Initiation

Before I prepare the rite, we begin with a consultation.

I will ask what has drawn you towards Gwydion, what you already know of him, whether you have previously approached him devotionally or magically, and what you hope this initiation will mark.

We may also look at the place ingenuity currently occupies in your life.

Where are you making or creating?

Where have you become stuck?

Where are circumstances asking you to adapt?

Where do words matter?

And where might the desire to overcome an obstacle be preventing you from asking whether it should be overcome at all?

Your answers shape the work I prepare.

The Working

The initiation moves through three parts: attention, making and consequence.

Attention begins with the situation as it is. Before another route can be found, we look at what is actually present: the materials, assumptions, limitations and possibilities already around you.

Making turns towards ingenuity. Through the personalised working, Gwydion is honoured and invited as we explore the possibility of another arrangement, another word, another approach or another way through.

Consequence looks beyond the immediate solution. What changes if the obstacle moves? What becomes possible? What responsibility follows? What may need tending afterwards?

Gwydion is invited rather than commanded, and I do not manufacture a response or message on his behalf. If something meaningful arises during the rite, I can describe what occurred and offer my interpretation as such. Silence is equally allowed to remain silence.

The working closes at a threshold rather than an ending.

The next part belongs to your practice.

Choosing Standard or Deluxe

The Standard Initiation is complete in itself. It provides the consultation, personalised rite, documentation, reflection and material needed to mark the threshold and begin exploring what follows.

The Deluxe Initiation is intended for someone who wants a more extensive process around that threshold. The additional consultation and preparatory work allow the initiation to be shaped more deeply around your circumstances, while the expanded material and later follow-up provide greater support for developing the relationship afterwards.

You do not need Deluxe in order for the initiation to be complete.

After the Threshold

A relationship with Gwydion does not require turning him into an uncomplicated spiritual teacher.

You may admire his ingenuity and remain troubled by some of the purposes to which he puts it. One part of his story may become important to you while another remains uncomfortable. Returning to the Fourth Branch after months or years may change what you think you understand about him.

There is no need to resolve those tensions before beginning.

Welsh stories can illuminate without becoming instruction manuals.

Gwydion's complexity is part of what makes sustained attention to him worthwhile.

This is a contemporary personalised spiritual and reflective rite informed by Welsh mythology, folklore and language. It does not reproduce a historically attested initiation into the worship of Gwydion, confer membership of a historical lineage, or guarantee contact with or response from a deity.

Gwydion's stories repeatedly ask what can be done when circumstances appear fixed.

A word can change an encounter. A disguise can change what someone sees. Materials can become something they were not before. An unexpected route can appear around what seemed immovable.

But finding another way is only part of the work.
