The Cŵn Annwn | Welsh Rites for Protection & Thresholds

The Cŵn Annwn — Hounds of Annwn — move through Welsh tradition at the boundary between the familiar world and the Otherworld.

In the First Branch of the Mabinogi, Pwyll encounters the hunting hounds of Arawn, king of Annwn, and their appearance marks them immediately as otherworldly: their coats are gleaming white and their ears red. Later Welsh folklore develops traditions of supernatural hounds and the otherworldly hunt in different ways, associating their cries and passage with the night landscape, death, pursuit, and the unseen.

The rites gathered here draw thoughtfully upon that tradition for work concerning protection, thresholds, spiritual boundaries, Otherworld awareness, and the keeping of what should not cross into protected space. Some may concern the home and household; others may explore the boundary between deliberate spiritual contact and unwanted intrusion, or our relationship with the wilder roads associated with Annwn.

These are contemporary spiritual practices inspired by Welsh story and folklore rather than historical rites attributed to the Cŵn Annwn themselves.

The Hounds need not be reduced to creatures of fear, nor made into simple guardians where the surviving stories give us something stranger. They belong to the road between worlds: unmistakable when encountered, difficult to domesticate, and worthy of respect at the places where one realm gives way to another.
