Blodeuwedd | Welsh Rites for Identity, Clarity & Reclamation

Blodeuwedd enters the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi already shaped by the intentions of others. Made from flowers by Math and Gwydion to become the wife of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, she is given beauty, a name, and a place within a story that began before she did. What follows is more difficult than any simple tale of liberation or betrayal.

This collection gathers rites, guides, and other work inspired by Blodeuwedd and the questions her story continues to raise. Here you may find work concerned with identity and expectation, transformation, self-possession, visibility, choice, and what happens when the role given to us no longer sits easily with the person living within it.

Blodeuwedd's story is not treated here as evidence of an ancient Welsh goddess of beauty, sovereignty, glamour, or feminine empowerment. Nor do I attempt to turn every choice she makes into an act of reclamation. Where the Fourth Branch provides the foundation, I distinguish its story from the contemporary interpretations and practices I develop from it.

There is room in Blodeuwedd's tale for discomfort and contradiction: a woman made for another person's need who nevertheless possesses a will of her own; actions that can be understood without necessarily being excused; flowers that become a human face, and a human face that ultimately becomes something else.

Perhaps that complexity is why she remains so compelling.

Her story does not have to tell us what freedom looks like. It can simply invite us to ask which parts of ourselves were chosen, which were given to us, and what we might choose differently when the choice becomes ours.
