Blodeuwedd enters the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi already surrounded by other people’s intentions.

Math and Gwydion create her from flowers as a wife for Lleu Llaw Gyffes. She is beautiful before she has had any opportunity to decide what beauty, marriage or desire will mean for herself. Later she meets Gronw Pebr, becomes his lover, and acts upon desires that do not fit the purpose for which she was made. The story does not turn those choices into uncomplicated liberation: she and Gronw also conspire to kill Lleu, and the consequences are severe. 

That complexity is precisely why I find her useful here.

Blodeuwedd is not reduced to a goddess of seduction. Instead, her story opens questions about the difference between being made desirable for somebody else and recognising desire as something we ourselves participate in.
