An Olwen Rite for the First Step Forward

There are times when the road ahead is visible, yet beginning still feels difficult.

Perhaps you have spent a long while waiting. Perhaps circumstances have changed and you know that you can move again, but the distance between knowing and doing still feels larger than it should. Sometimes there is no great revelation needed. There is simply a first step that has not yet been taken.

Where Flowers Follow is a personalised Welsh rite inspired by Olwen in Culhwch ac Olwen and the flowers said to spring beneath her feet.

It does not promise to reveal where the road will end. Instead, the work centres upon beginning: choosing one movement that is genuinely yours and giving it your attention.

Essence of the Rite

A beginning does not have to contain the whole journey.

Sometimes we delay because we believe we should already know what comes afterwards. We wait for certainty, confidence, the right moment, or some unmistakable sign that we have chosen correctly.

Yet movement can begin before certainty does.

This rite is for the point at which waiting has done what it needed to do and you are ready to place one foot beyond it. Rather than asking you to reinvent yourself or force a dramatic new beginning, it asks something smaller:

What is the next step you can actually take?

This rite may suit you if you are beginning again after a period of stillness, taking the first practical step towards something important, rebuilding momentum after plans have stalled, or moving into a new chapter without yet knowing exactly what it will become.

It can also support a transition in which the direction is broadly known but beginning feels difficult.

You do not need to arrive with a complete plan. The work begins with where you are.

Olwen and the Flowers Beneath Her Feet

Olwen appears in the Welsh tale Culhwch ac Olwen, preserved among the stories commonly collected today as the Mabinogion.

She is the daughter of Ysbaddaden Bencawr, the giant whose death is foretold should his daughter marry. Culhwch's pursuit of Olwen therefore leads not directly to marriage but into an extraordinary sequence of demands, journeys and seemingly impossible tasks.

When Olwen herself first appears, the tale describes her through a series of comparisons with the natural world. Her hair is likened to yellow broom, her skin to sea foam and her fingers to wood anemones.

Then comes the detail for which she is especially remembered: four white trefoils spring up wherever she steps, and the tale connects this with her name.

Later traditions and modern spiritual interpretations have sometimes expanded Olwen into a goddess of spring, sunlight, flowers or renewal. The surviving medieval story does not give her those roles.

For this rite, I prefer to stay with the smaller and stranger image the tale actually gives us:

Olwen walks, and flowers follow.

The First Step

Olwen's circumstances are not simple.

When Culhwch asks her to leave with him, she does not. She explains that she has given her word not to go without her father's counsel and tells Culhwch that he must approach Ysbaddaden instead.

What follows is anything but easy.

I do not read this as a simple story about courage, nor do I present Olwen as a medieval embodiment of personal growth. Her story is too complicated for that.

What interests me here is movement within constraint.

There are circumstances we cannot immediately alter. There are roads whose endings we cannot see. Yet within them there may still be something that belongs to us: a decision, an enquiry, a conversation, an application, a boundary, a return to abandoned work, or simply the willingness to begin.

The first step does not have to solve what comes after it.

It only has to be taken.

The Working

It is to mark the place where standing becomes walking.

Patience and the Road

Movement has its own rhythm. There may be periods of action followed by pauses, reconsideration, or a change of direction. None of these necessarily mean that the beginning was mistaken.

The image of flowers following Olwen is useful precisely because the flowers are associated with where she has already stepped.

They do not appear miles ahead to show her the destination.

There is something worth remembering in that.

You may not need proof of the whole road before you begin. Sometimes you can look instead at the ground immediately beneath you and decide whether it is time to place your foot there.
