The Quiet Radiance
A Rhiannon Rite for Confidence & Presence
Confidence is not always loud.
Sometimes it is simply the ability to enter a room without first deciding how much of yourself should be hidden. To speak without apologising for having something to say. To allow attention to rest upon you without immediately wishing to disappear from it.
There are periods when that ease becomes difficult.
We may begin measuring ourselves through other people's reactions, comparing ourselves too closely with those around us, or becoming so accustomed to making ourselves smaller that being fully present starts to feel uncomfortable.
The Quiet Radiance is a personalised rite centred upon Rhiannon and the cultivation of confidence, self-possession and presence.
It is not intended to make you more beautiful or compel other people to see you differently.
The work begins with how you stand in your own company.
About this rite
Rhiannon first appears in the First Branch of the Mabinogi in a scene that immediately establishes something of her character.
Pwyll sees her riding past the mound at Arberth and sends rider after rider to catch her. However hard they pursue, they cannot reach her. Eventually Pwyll calls directly to her, and Rhiannon stops.
She has come because she has made a choice of her own.
Throughout her story, Rhiannon repeatedly demonstrates intelligence, composure and an ability to speak for herself even when circumstances turn harshly against her. Later, when falsely accused of causing the disappearance of her son, she accepts a humiliating penance imposed upon her, yet the narrative does not reduce her to that humiliation. She remains Rhiannon.
Modern interpretations often speak of Rhiannon in terms of sovereignty, beauty or feminine power. Those can be meaningful contemporary readings, but they are interpretations rather than simple descriptions handed to us by the medieval text.
For this rite, I return to something quieter in her story: the ability to remain recognisably oneself while being seen.
The ritual I prepare is contemporary. Rhiannon's story provides the relationship and reflection beneath it.
This rite may help you cultivate
The Quiet Radiance may suit you if you are rebuilding confidence after a period of self-doubt, learning to speak or present yourself more comfortably, or trying to loosen habits of comparison and self-consciousness.
It may also be useful before a period in which you expect to be more visible: beginning new work, speaking publicly, meeting new people, returning to social spaces, sharing creative work, or simply practising taking up your own ordinary amount of room.
This is not a rite for becoming fearless.
Confidence can exist alongside uncertainty.
The aim is to help create a deliberate point of return to yourself when uncertainty begins deciding how visible you are allowed to be.
Your Rite Options
I prepare each Quiet Radiance rite individually around the circumstances you bring to me.
Both options include a complete personalised working with Rhiannon centred upon confidence, self-possession and presence. Deluxe offers greater space to explore your relationship with visibility and being seen.
The Quiet Radiance — Standard Rite
Best suited when you can identify the area in which you want greater confidence or steadiness: perhaps speaking publicly, entering new social or professional spaces, sharing creative work, receiving attention more comfortably, or returning to yourself after a period of self-doubt.
Includes:
- Preparation of the working space
- Offering to Rhiannon
- Personalised Quiet Radiance rite shaped around your circumstances and intention
- Main working centred upon confidence, recognition and presence
- Mirror work where appropriate to the rite, used as part of my contemporary practice rather than as a historical attribute of Rhiannon
- Photographic record of the completed working
- Written account of the rite, materials and symbolism used

- Personalised reflective practice for continuing the work afterwards
Your continuing practice may centre upon visibility, self-talk, comparison, speaking, receiving attention, or another aspect of confidence appropriate to your circumstances.
The Standard Rite is a complete working in its own right. It is best suited when the place in which you want to stand more confidently is already reasonably clear.
The Quiet Radiance — Deluxe Rite: The Steady Presence

- Preparation of the main working space

Walking with Rhiannon
When Pwyll's riders cannot catch Rhiannon, the solution is not greater speed.
Pwyll eventually asks her to stop.
She does.
There is something I value in that small moment. Rhiannon is not captured by pursuit. The encounter begins when someone finally addresses her, and she chooses to answer.
Her later story is considerably harsher, but it carries another form of endurance. Shame is imposed upon her publicly, yet it does not become the whole of who she is. Eventually her son is restored to her, and the story moves beyond the accusation that had temporarily defined her circumstances.
Confidence does not require us to become untouched by judgement.
Perhaps it asks something more difficult: learning that being judged, overlooked, praised or noticed does not have to determine the entirety of how we understand ourselves.
Radiance need not demand attention.
Sometimes it is simply what becomes visible when we stop trying to disappear.
May you recognise yourself without diminishing what you find, and learn to remain present without first asking whether you have permission to be seen.
Gyda hyder a thawelwch,
With confidence and calm,
Elowen
