A Welsh Rite of Visibility & Expression

There are times when the difficulty is not finding something worth saying, making or offering.

It is allowing it to be seen.

Work may remain private long after it is ready to meet other eyes. An idea may be softened before it is spoken. A new role may ask us to step forward more visibly than we are used to. Sometimes we know what we want to contribute, but hesitate at the point where contribution becomes exposure.

The Eye of Light is a personalised Welsh-inspired rite for those moments.

It is concerned with visibility, expression and the deliberate act of bringing something into view.

The rite does not promise charisma, magnetism or favourable attention from others. It does not attempt to make you more impressive.

Instead, it creates a deliberate space in which to consider what you are ready to show, say or offer openly, and what has made that visibility difficult.

About this rite

The title draws upon a phrase associated with the modern Welsh bardic and Gorsedd tradition: “yn llygad haul, wyneb goleuni” — approximately, “in the eye of the sun and the face of light.”

The modern Gorsedd was developed in the late eighteenth century by Iolo Morganwg, whose work combined genuine antiquarian interest with extensive invention. I therefore do not present its ceremonial language as an unchanged survival from ancient druidic Wales.

That later Welsh tradition is still historically significant in its own right.

One of its recurring ideas is that bardic work should take place openly: in a visible place, beneath the sky, within the sight and hearing of others.

For this rite, that image becomes a way of thinking about expression.

Something prepared in private eventually enters a space where it can be witnessed.

Not because visibility makes it more valuable.

Because some forms of work only become fully part of the world once they are allowed to leave our keeping.

This rite is not primarily about confidence.

You do not need to feel completely confident before you speak, publish, show, apply or step forward.

The concern is more specific:

What are you ready to make visible?

And what would it mean to let that thing be seen without turning yourself into a performance for the people looking?

The Working

I prepare each Eye of Light rite individually around what you are bringing into view.

The working centres upon the movement from private preparation into public expression.

That may mean a piece of creative work, an idea, a professional contribution, a new role, something you need to say clearly, or another form of visibility appropriate to your circumstances.

Light is used symbolically within the rite not as a force that makes you radiant or attractive, but as a condition in which something can be seen.

The purpose is not to compel attention.

It is to stop concealing what you have already decided deserves a place in the world.

In the face of light

Visibility is not the same thing as performance.

To make something public does not require us to become louder than we are.

A poem can be spoken quietly and still be heard. A piece of work can be offered without being defended in advance. A person can enter a more visible role without reshaping themselves around every possible reaction.

The language of the later Welsh bardic revival gives us an image I find useful here:

something brought into the open, beneath the sky, where it may be witnessed.

That does not mean everything private should become public.

Some things deserve protection.

Some work needs more time before it leaves us.

The rite begins only where you already know that concealment has lasted long enough.

The Eye of Light is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item will be shipped.

Your ritual photographs and written materials are delivered digitally following completion.

A working email address is required. I will contact you after ordering if further information is needed before preparing your rite.

Please allow 1–3 weeks for preparation and completion.

The rites I prepare are offered for spiritual practice, reflection and personal development. They do not guarantee attention, approval, professional success, social influence or any other particular response from other people and should not replace appropriate professional support where needed.

Because each rite is individually prepared, completed ritual work cannot be refunded once preparation and performance have taken place.
