Song of Awen

There are times when creativity does not disappear so much as become difficult to reach.

You may still care deeply about the work, yet find yourself unable to begin, unable to continue, or no longer trusting what once came naturally.

Song of Awen is a personalised Welsh rite for creative renewal, created for writers, artists, musicians, makers and others who want to reconnect with imagination, confidence and the simple act of making.

It does not promise sudden inspiration or effortless productivity. Instead, it creates space to return to the work without forcing it.

At its centre is awen — the Welsh idea of poetic inspiration and creative flow — approached through the story of Ceridwen, Gwion Bach and the cauldron tended for a year and a day.

The image matters because inspiration in that story does not appear without preparation.

Something is tended before anything arrives.

This rite may suit you if

Ceridwen, Awen and the Work of Tending

The Welsh story most closely informing this rite is the tale surrounding Ceridwen, Gwion Bach and Taliesin.

In the familiar account, Ceridwen prepares a cauldron for her son Afagddu. The preparation lasts for a year and a day, with Gwion Bach tending the mixture while Morda keeps the fire.

Eventually, three extraordinary drops fall from the cauldron. But they do not fall where Ceridwen intended.

What follows becomes a story of knowledge, pursuit and transformation, but before any of that comes the quieter image at the heart of this rite: something is prepared over time. A vessel is watched. A fire is kept. The work continues before anyone knows what its outcome will be.

That offers a useful way of thinking about creativity.

The finished poem, painting, song, object or project is only one part of creative life. There is also gathering, practising, experimenting, abandoning attempts, returning to them, and continuing before inspiration feels certain.

The rite I prepare is contemporary rather than a reconstructed historical ceremony. Its Welsh grounding comes from allowing these stories and ideas to shape the work honestly, rather than treating Ceridwen as a generic creativity goddess or awen as something that can simply be switched on at will.

The Working

I prepare each Song of Awen rite individually around your creative practice and the circumstances that have brought you to it.

You may be working on one particular project, or simply trying to renew your broader relationship with imagination and making.

The work considers what has become difficult, what still holds your interest, what may need greater patience, and where a gentler return might begin.

Ceridwen is honoured within the rite through the Welsh story that informs it. She is invited rather than commanded, and I do not claim that a particular event during the working proves her presence or guarantees a response.

The exact materials and ritual form vary according to the individual rite. I do not use a fixed collection of supposedly ancient Welsh correspondences, and the working is not designed around producing an elaborate altar for display.

The materials present are there because the rite needs them.

The emphasis is on tending, preparation and return.

Song of Awen — Standard Rite

The Standard Rite is best suited when you already have a reasonably clear sense of what has become difficult within your creative practice and want a focused working to help mark your return to it.

Standard includes:

• a short private consultation by email about your creative practice;
• a personalised Song of Awen rite prepared around your circumstances;
• an offering made in acknowledgement of Ceridwen;
• a photographic record of the completed working;
• a written account of the rite and its symbolism;
• a Companion Guide exploring Ceridwen, Gwion Bach, Taliesin and awen, together with practices for rebuilding creative rhythm without forcing inspiration.

The Standard Rite is complete in its own right.

Song of Awen — Deluxe Rite: The Three Drops

The Deluxe Rite is intended for a more complicated period of creative stagnation, particularly when exhaustion, doubt, perfectionism, changing identity or several unfinished projects have become intertwined.

Deluxe includes everything in Standard, plus:

• a longer personal consultation before I prepare the work;
• a separate preliminary cleansing and clearing rite;
• an expanded personalised Song of Awen working shaped by what emerges through the consultation;
• a more detailed written account of the completed rite;
• an expanded personalised Companion Guide;
• additional reflective and journalling work around confidence, unfinished work, experimentation and creative rhythm;
• one follow-up message after you have had time to return to your work.

Choose Deluxe when the difficulty is not simply beginning again, but understanding what has made returning to your creative life so difficult.

Awen is not seized

Creative practice can easily become another place in which we demand results from ourselves.

Write something good. Finish something useful. Find the right idea. Make the work worthy of the time spent on it.

Under enough pressure, even something deeply loved can begin to feel like another obligation.

Song of Awen begins elsewhere.

Sometimes creativity returns dramatically. More often, it begins with something smaller: a note written down before it disappears, a page opened again, a half-finished idea that suddenly feels worth another look.

Awen may arrive as inspiration.

It may also arrive as the willingness to begin.

Before You Order

Song of Awen is a personalised digital spiritual service for adults aged 18 and over. No physical item will be shipped.

After ordering, I will contact you using the email address provided at checkout. You will be able to tell me about your creative practice, what has brought you to the rite, and anything you particularly want me to consider while preparing it.

Once I have the information needed to begin, please allow 1–3 weeks for preparation and completion. Your ritual photographs and written materials will then be delivered digitally.

The rites I prepare are offered for spiritual practice, reflection and creative exploration. Song of Awen does not guarantee inspiration, artistic success, productivity, publication, recognition or any particular creative outcome.

It is not intended to treat depression, burnout or other medical or psychological concerns, and appropriate professional support should take priority where needed.

A relationship with Ceridwen is not imposed or made binding through this work. Continued devotional practice remains entirely your choice.
