There are times when a particular figure from Welsh tradition does not simply interest us intellectually. Something in the story continues to return. We read again, notice different details, feel drawn towards prayer or offering, or begin wondering what it might mean to approach that figure with greater intention.

Rhiannon at Arberth is a personalised initiation for those who feel that kind of pull towards Rhiannon.

It does not ask you to approach her for one particular outcome. This is not primarily a rite for love, prosperity, confidence, fertility or protection. Other offerings already exist for those needs.

This initiation is about Rhiannon herself.

It marks the beginning, renewal or deepening of a devotional relationship with her, allowing that relationship to develop through attention, study, offering, reflection and whatever forms of spiritual experience may follow.

This rite may suit you if

You may be drawn to this initiation because Rhiannon herself has become important to you, but that is not the only reason to begin.

The rite may also suit you if you are working through a period in which questions of choice, sovereignty, endurance, dignity or direction have become especially significant. You may be learning to make decisions that are genuinely your own, rebuilding trust in yourself after criticism or misjudgement, or trying to remain steady while circumstances around you are changing.

It may speak to you if you are entering a new stage of life and want to approach it with greater self-possession, or if you are exploring how to remain open to love, relationship, responsibility and devotion without surrendering your own agency within them.

You may also come to the initiation because you are drawn to Rhiannon’s relationship with horses, roads, movement, the Otherworld, endurance, or the strange quality of distance that appears around her stories and the Birds of Rhiannon.

Some people will approach this work devotionally. Others may be seeking a deeper spiritual relationship with the themes Rhiannon carries before deciding whether an ongoing devotional practice is right for them.

You do not need to arrive with certainty about why she matters to you.

The initiation gives that question somewhere to begin.

Rhiannon at Arberth

Rhiannon first appears in the First Branch of the Mabinogi at the mound of Arberth.

Pwyll sees her riding past upon a horse that appears to move at an ordinary pace. Yet however hard his riders pursue her, they cannot catch her. Eventually Pwyll himself follows, exhausting his horse without closing the distance.

Only when he calls to her directly and asks her to stop does she do so.

The moment matters because Rhiannon is not discovered waiting passively for Pwyll. She has come with an intention of her own.

She tells him plainly that she wishes to marry him rather than Gwawl, the man to whom others intend to give her. She establishes how they are to meet again and later proves considerably more capable than Pwyll when his own judgement places their plans in danger.

Her story does not remain easy.

After the disappearance of her son, Rhiannon is falsely accused of killing him and subjected to humiliating punishment. Eventually the child is restored to her, but the story does not erase what she endured before that restoration.

Across these episodes, Rhiannon repeatedly remains a person capable of choosing, speaking, enduring and acting within circumstances she cannot entirely control.

That is the Rhiannon this initiation approaches.

Not a flattened goddess of universal abundance, nor an unquestioned symbol of perfect feminine sovereignty, but the complex figure preserved in Welsh story and the relationships people continue to form with her now.

The Working

I prepare every Rhiannon at Arberth initiation individually.

Before the rite, I will ask what has drawn you towards Rhiannon, what you already know of her, whether you have any existing devotional practice, and what you hope the initiation will mark.

You do not need to arrive with a fixed spiritual goal.

The working is shaped as a threshold rather than a transaction. Rhiannon is honoured and invited with respect, and an offering forms part of the rite. The details of the working are chosen according to your circumstances and the relationship you wish to begin or deepen.

The emphasis is not upon asking Rhiannon to immediately provide something in return.

Instead, the initiation creates a deliberate first meeting place: a point from which you can begin listening, learning and responding.

A devotional relationship may eventually include prayer, offering, dreamwork, divination, study, time with horses or landscape, creative practice, or something much quieter. I do not decide in advance what form yours must take.

An initiation is not a demand for certainty.

You may leave the rite feeling an immediate sense of connection. You may notice dreams, impressions, coincidences or experiences that feel significant to you. You may instead find that the relationship develops slowly through reading, occasional offerings and returning to the stories.

There is no single correct pace.

Rhiannon's first appearance at Arberth offers an image worth keeping close. Pwyll cannot reach her by riding harder. The encounter begins when he finally stops trying to overcome the distance and speaks.

A devotional relationship can be approached in much the same spirit.
