The moon is easy to turn into a system.

Phases become correspondences, full moons acquire fixed meanings, animals become symbols, and the night begins to look like something that needs to be interpreted before it has even been observed.

I wanted this book to begin somewhere quieter.

Moon, Night & Folk Practice is a 95-page digital workbook and Workbook Two in the Welsh Folk Magic Series, exploring lunar lore, darkness, weather, water, folklore and spiritual practice through a distinctly Welsh lens.

This is the revised and substantially expanded edition of the original guide. Previously 62 pages, it has grown to 95 pages through new chapters, expanded folklore and natural observation, deeper practical work, more personal reflection, additional Welsh language material, and a fuller glossary and resource section. It is not simply a reformatted version of the earlier workbook, but a more complete exploration of the night, the moon and the landscapes through which they are encountered.

Rather than presenting one reconstructed system of “Celtic moon magic,” I begin with the moon as something actually encountered: rising above houses and hills, appearing through cloud, reflecting on water, disappearing into weather, and changing the landscape beneath it. From there, the book moves outward into the wider night: mist, tides, wells and springs, animals after dark, dreams, omens, household practice, folklore, seasonal change and the ways a personal practice can grow through repeated attention.

Throughout the workbook, I move between Welsh folklore and historical tradition, direct observation of the natural world, and contemporary spiritual practice. Those things can sit beside one another without needing to become identical. A moon halo can be understood through ice crystals and still feel significant. A fox can simply be crossing the road, or an encounter may stay with you long enough to gather another meaning. Not every quiet night needs to become a message.

Inside, you will explore the moon over Wales; recognising lunar phases by sight; moonlight, darkness and human perception; weather lore, halos, mist and changing air; tides, moon water, wells, springs, rain and dew; walking familiar landscapes after dark; owls, bats, foxes, hares, moths, spiders and other night wildlife; the Cŵn Annwn, Tylwyth Teg, gwyllion, toili and other traditions of the Welsh night; dreams and night thoughts; signs and omens; building a sustainable night practice; working through the lunar cycle; water, flame, thread and stone; hearth and household practice; the changing Welsh year; night journalling; and what it means when a spiritual practice becomes quiet for a while.

I also write about carrying Welsh tradition while living away from Wales, returning to places in North Wales that still matter to me, and learning the Danish landscape I now inhabit without asking it to become a substitute for somewhere else.

Welsh language is woven throughout the workbook, with translations given naturally as terms appear. Where I offer a Welsh phrase that you might use aloud within a practice, I also include a simple pronunciation guide. The closing sections contain a Welsh glossary and a resource list for readers who want to follow the folklore, language, places and historical material further.

This guide is written for readers both within and beyond Wales. You do not need to live beneath a Welsh night sky to work with it. What matters is learning the landscape you actually inhabit while allowing Welsh story, language and tradition to shape the way you look, listen and return.
