Mabon Unbound

There are periods of life that take us far from parts of ourselves we once knew easily.

Strength can become difficult to reach. Curiosity can quieten. Confidence, pleasure, creativity or vitality may retreat beneath responsibility, exhaustion, grief, long uncertainty, or simply the work of getting through what had to be endured.

After long enough, absence can begin to feel permanent.

Mabon Unbound is a personalised initiation with Mabon ap Modron for those who feel that something important within them has become inaccessible and are ready to begin finding their way back to it.

The initiation does not ask you to become who you were before.

It begins with a different possibility: that what has been hidden, constrained or separated from you may not have been destroyed.

This initiation may suit you if

Mabon Unbound may suit you if you:

• feel you have lost contact with a former sense of vitality, confidence, curiosity or joy;
• are emerging from a long period of restriction, depletion or responsibility;
• have spent so much time surviving or attending to others that parts of your own life have become distant;

• are drawn specifically to Mabon ap Modron and want to begin a deeper spiritual relationship with him.

This is an initiation rather than a general rite. The work is therefore not only about one immediate difficulty. It is an invitation into an ongoing relationship with Mabon and the themes carried by his surviving Welsh story.

Mabon ap Modron

Mabon appears most fully in the Welsh tale Culhwch ac Olwen.

He is Mabon son of Modron, taken from his mother when he is only three nights old. Later, when Culhwch's companions require his help in the hunting of Twrch Trwyth, finding him becomes a quest in its own right.

Arthur's men seek knowledge from creatures of extraordinary age.

They ask the Blackbird of Cilgwri, the Stag of Rhedynfre, the Owl of Cwm Cawl and the Eagle of Gwernabwy. Each remembers a world older than the last, yet none knows where Mabon is held.

Eventually the Salmon of Llyn Llyw carries Cei and Bedwyr towards the place where Mabon's voice can be heard from his imprisonment.

He is found, and he is freed.

The initiation takes its shape from that movement.

Mabon is not treated here as a convenient Welsh god of generic rebirth or sunlight. His story gives us something more particular: someone taken away, hidden for a very long time, sought with persistence, discovered through listening, and finally brought out from confinement.

What has been hidden is not always gone.

The Initiation

I prepare each Mabon Unbound initiation for one person.

Before beginning, I will ask about what has brought you to Mabon, what feels absent or constrained in your life, and what you hope this relationship might help you explore.

The work may centre on vitality, confidence, pleasure, creative life, instinct, independence or another part of yourself that has become difficult to reach. For some, there is a clear sense of what has been lost. For others, there is only the feeling that life has narrowed and something beyond that narrowing is beginning to call.

The initiation is shaped around seeking, listening, recognition and return.

Mabon is honoured as himself, and the work opens a relationship rather than assigning him a task to complete on your behalf.

There is room within that relationship for mystery. You may experience Mabon through prayer, dreams, intuition, symbolic encounters, devotional practice, direct spiritual presence, or in ways particular to you.

The purpose of the initiation is to establish the threshold from which that relationship can continue.

The Standard Initiation offers a complete beginning to your work with Mabon ap Modron.

The Deluxe Initiation is intended for those who want a more substantial beginning or whose relationship with recovery, confinement or return carries greater complexity.

It includes everything in Standard, plus:

• a separate preliminary cleansing and preparation rite;
• an expanded personalised initiation;
• a more detailed written account;
• an expanded Companion Guide;
• deeper work with the sequence of the ancient animals and the long search for Mabon;
• additional devotional and reflective practices around listening, recognition and release;

Choose Deluxe when the initiation feels less like opening one door and more like beginning a longer return to something that has been distant for years.

The Long Search

One of the things I find most compelling about Mabon's story is that he is not found immediately.

The search moves through beings whose memories extend across immense spans of time. One after another, they cannot provide the answer.

Yet the search continues.

There is something important in that when thinking about our own lost or inaccessible parts: we do not always recover them by remembering exactly where we left them.

Sometimes we find them indirectly: through the things that still stir us, through old pleasures approached differently, through unexpected recognition, through the body remembering an ease the mind had forgotten, or through a new relationship with something we thought belonged only to an earlier life.

Return does not have to mean restoration to an earlier version of yourself.

Mabon is released into a world that has continued while he was hidden.

So are we.

The question is not simply how to go back.

It is what becomes possible now that something long confined can move again.
