Lanterns of the Ellyllon is a personalised Welsh rite centred upon the Ellyllon of Welsh fairy tradition and the idea of quiet assistance given on its own terms.

It is not a rite for commanding fairy beings, securing a permanent spirit helper, or asking the unseen to solve your life for you. Its concern is with reciprocity: making room for help, recognising what remains yours to tend, and receiving support without assuming ownership of its source.

The Ellyllon in Welsh Folklore

The ellyll appears in Welsh fairy tradition as a small supernatural being, with ellyllon as the plural. Accounts vary, and the folklore does not give us one perfectly consistent description of them.

One particularly useful nineteenth-century account, recorded by Wirt Sikes, tells of Rowli Pugh, a poor farmer whose household and farm seem unable to prosper despite his efforts.

An ellyll offers assistance on two conditions: a candle must be left burning at night, and the hearth swept clean.

Rowli and his wife Catti agree.

During the night, the Ellyllon work unseen. In the morning, the household is in order. Their help continues over a long period, and the family and farm gradually fare better.

Eventually Catti becomes curious and watches them at work. Her laughter extinguishes the candle, and the Ellyllon leave.

What interests me in that story is not the idea of acquiring obedient supernatural helpers.

It is that help is offered with boundaries.

The household must prepare the space. The assistance is real within the story, but it is not theirs to control.

That is the thread I carry into this rite.
