There are times when the shape of a problem seems fixed because every familiar way through it has already been tried.

At such moments, another kind of intelligence is required: the willingness to look again, to work with what is actually present, and to recognise that changing the conditions around a problem can sometimes reveal possibilities that force alone cannot.

Fire in the Shaping Hand is a personalised initiation dedicated to Gwydion fab Dôn, one of the great magicians and makers of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi. It is intended for those who feel drawn towards his complicated current of craft, language, ingenuity and transformation, and who wish to explore not only what they are capable of shaping, but the responsibility that accompanies that ability.

This is not an initiation into mastery over circumstances or other people.

It begins with a more difficult question:

What will you make with what is already in your hands?

About Gwydion fab Dôn

Gwydion is not an easy figure to reduce to a single role.

In the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, he is magician, storyteller, warrior, deceiver, maker and foster-father. His intelligence repeatedly changes what appears possible. Through enchantment and disguise he alters appearances and circumstances; with Math he participates in the creation of Blodeuedd from flowers; through ingenuity he enables Lleu to receive a name and arms despite the prohibitions placed upon him; and when Lleu is later transformed and wounded, Gwydion searches for him and helps restore him.

Yet the same tale refuses to make his abilities synonymous with wisdom.

Gwydion helps his brother Gilfaethwy create the circumstances that allow a terrible wrong to be committed against Goewin. He deceives Pryderi in order to obtain the pigs given to him by Arawn, setting in motion a conflict that ends with Gwydion killing Pryderi. Math subsequently punishes Gwydion and Gilfaethwy for what they have done.

His story therefore offers something more demanding than a celebration of cleverness or magical power.

Capability has consequences.

The person who knows how to change circumstances must still decide whether they should.

This initiation approaches Gwydion with that complexity intact.

The Shaping Hand

The title Fire in the Shaping Hand is contemporary. I do not present fire or the shaping hand as historically attested symbols of Gwydion.

Here, the image describes a particular way of approaching his stories.

A skilled hand can carve, mend, write, weave, build or alter. Fire can illuminate and transform, but it can also destroy when handled without care. Neither is inherently wise simply because it is powerful.

Together they become a metaphor for creative agency held alongside responsibility.

The initiation therefore does not ask Gwydion to make the world bend to your will. Instead, it explores your own capacity to respond creatively when something cannot remain as it is.

Sometimes that means making something new.

Sometimes it means repairing what can still be repaired.

Sometimes it means recognising that the most ingenious solution is not necessarily the right one.

This Initiation May Suit You If

You may be drawn towards this initiation if you work with your hands, words or imagination and want to deepen the relationship between creativity and spiritual practice. It may also suit you if you are facing a problem that requires adaptability rather than persistence along the same familiar route, rebuilding something after failure, or learning to trust your ability to find possibilities that are not immediately obvious.

Writers, artists, craftspeople, designers and other makers may find particular resonance here, but making need not be professional or artistic. A life can also be shaped through choices, relationships, habits and the ways we respond when circumstances change.

Above all, this initiation is for someone drawn specifically to Gwydion, including the uncomfortable parts of his story.

You do not need to regard him as a model of perfect behaviour in order to find value in walking beside his tales.

Naming and the Work of the Hand

One episode in Gwydion's story offers a particularly rich thread for this initiation.

Arianrhod declares that her son will have no name unless she gives it to him herself. Gwydion later disguises himself and the boy as shoemakers, creating circumstances in which Arianrhod watches the child strike a wren with remarkable skill.

Her response inadvertently gives him his name:

Lleu Llaw Gyffes.

The episode is complicated, as so much surrounding Gwydion is, and this initiation does not treat it as evidence of a historical Welsh naming practice.

Instead, I use it as a point of reflection.

The name emerges from something done.

For that reason, part of this work asks you to consider the relationship between identity and practice. Rather than searching for a hidden spiritual name that supposedly reveals who you truly are, we look towards what your choices, skills and repeated actions already say about the person you are becoming.

What does the work of your hands reveal about you?

The Initiation

Every Fire in the Shaping Hand initiation is prepared individually.

After learning what has drawn you towards Gwydion and what you hope to explore through the work, I shape the rite around that particular relationship rather than performing an identical ceremony for every person.

The working centres upon making.

The exact materials may vary according to your intention and the circumstances in which I prepare the rite, but they are chosen because they are needed for the work rather than to create an elaborate altar for display. Through them, the rite explores something being shaped deliberately from one state into another.

Gwydion is honoured and invited rather than commanded.

The working considers three closely connected threads: what you possess the ability to change, what ingenuity might make possible, and what responsibility accompanies the choices available to you.

There is room here for experimentation and imagination, but also for restraint.

The purpose is not to leave the rite believing that sufficient cleverness can overcome every obstacle. It is to begin recognising the difference between being able to shape something and having good reason to shape it.

Working with a Complicated Figure

I do not believe that honouring a figure from Welsh tradition requires making that figure flawless.

Gwydion can be extraordinarily resourceful, persistent and creative. He can also deceive, manipulate circumstances and cause harm.

Both belong to his story.

For me, removing the difficult parts would also remove much of what makes him worth encountering.

His tales allow us to consider creativity without pretending that creativity is automatically benevolent, intelligence without assuming intelligence produces good judgement, and transformation without forgetting that every transformation changes something beyond the person who initiated it.

A relationship with Gwydion can therefore include admiration, discomfort, questioning and disagreement.

Devotion does not require the abandonment of discernment.

Continuing After the Rite

An initiation begins a conversation rather than completing one.

You may choose to continue through reading the Fourth Branch, making something with deliberate attention, writing, learning a craft, keeping a record of problems approached differently, or simply noticing the moments when cleverness begins to outrun consideration.

There is no requirement to maintain an altar, make continual offerings, or interpret ordinary events as messages.

If something feels significant, you can notice it without immediately deciding what it means.

The relationship is allowed to develop slowly.

If making or creative work already forms part of your life, you are welcome to tell me about it, but no particular artistic or magical experience is required.

There is no need to arrive with a perfectly formed intention.

Our conversation gives me the context I need to prepare something that belongs to your circumstances rather than fitting you into a predetermined template.

Once I have the information I need to begin, your initiation will be prepared and completed within 1–3 weeks.

Your photographs and digital materials will then be delivered to the same email address.
