There are many ways to be a man, and many ways to carry masculinity.

Some are inherited before we have ever had the chance to examine them. Strength may be confused with silence. Responsibility may become carrying everything alone. Capability can turn into pressure to always know what to do, while vulnerability is treated as something to overcome rather than something human.

Other ideas deserve keeping.

Steadiness. Skill. Restraint. Protection without domination. The willingness to take responsibility for what we do with whatever power, influence or ability we possess.

Derwydd Initiation is a personalised Welsh rite for men, and for those who wish to explore a specifically masculine dimension of their spiritual practice.

Rather than presenting one fixed model of the “sacred masculine,” the initiation creates space to consider the kind of masculine presence you consciously want to inhabit: what strength means to you, what responsibility asks of you, and what qualities you want to carry forward deliberately rather than simply because they were handed to you.

This Initiation May Suit You If

You want a spiritual rite that speaks deliberately to masculine experience rather than treating it as an invisible default.

You are reconsidering what being a man, or living in relationship with masculinity, means to you.

You want to cultivate strength without making hardness the measure of it.

You are learning how to carry responsibility without assuming that everything must be carried alone.

You want to become more deliberate about how you use skill, authority, influence or leadership.

You are interested in Welsh tradition and drawn particularly towards figures such as Gwydion, Lleu Llaw Gyffes or Arawn.

Or perhaps you do not arrive with a problem to solve at all.

You may simply want to mark a threshold in your own understanding of masculinity and begin a period of practice concerned with strength, conduct, responsibility and wisdom.

The rite is particularly intended for men and those who identify strongly with masculine experience. It does not require conformity to one kind of manhood, body, sexuality, temperament or life.

The question is not whether you are masculine enough. It is what kind of masculinity you choose to practise.

Derwydd — the Welsh Druid

Derwydd is the Welsh word for druid.

The historical druids of Britain remain difficult to reconstruct with certainty. Classical writers describe religious specialists among Celtic-speaking peoples, while later Welsh literature, antiquarian scholarship and the modern Gorsedd each contributed further layers to the cultural image of the druid.

Those layers do not form one unchanged tradition.

For this initiation, I am less interested in pretending that we can recover a complete ancient druidic path than in the figure that the derwydd has continued to represent within Welsh imagination: someone expected to learn, observe, speak carefully, remember tradition and understand that knowledge carries responsibility.

The initiation I prepare is contemporary.

Its masculine focus comes not from a claim that ancient Welsh druids practised a male mystery tradition, but from bringing that enduring image of disciplined knowledge into conversation with several complicated men from Welsh medieval literature.

None provides a perfect model.

That is precisely why they are useful.

Gwydion — Skill and Consequence

Gwydion appears in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi as one of its most capable and troubling figures.

He is eloquent, inventive and extraordinarily skilled. His abilities repeatedly alter the course of other people's lives.

They do not always do so well.

Gwydion's story makes it difficult to confuse capability with wisdom. Intelligence, persuasion and magical skill remain morally neutral until somebody decides how to use them.

Within the initiation, he raises a difficult masculine question: What responsibilities accompany becoming capable?

Being able to influence a situation does not automatically mean we should. Knowing how to win does not tell us whether winning is worth the cost. Strength becomes more meaningful when restraint remains available beside it.

Lleu Llaw Gyffes — Becoming Under Expectation

Lleu's life begins beneath other people's decisions.

Arianrhod refuses him a name and later the right to bear arms unless she herself grants them. Gwydion repeatedly intervenes, manipulating circumstances until those restrictions are overcome. Blodeuwedd is then created to become Lleu's wife, and the story eventually moves through betrayal, attempted murder and restoration.

Lleu is therefore difficult to reduce to the shining warrior sometimes found in modern spiritual descriptions.

His story is also about becoming a man while other people are repeatedly deciding what that man should be.

That provides another question for the initiation:

What have you inherited about manhood?
What was taught deliberately?
What was absorbed simply by watching?
Which expectations still belong to you?
And which have remained only because nobody ever suggested you were allowed to put them down?

Arawn — Power and Restraint

Arawn appears in the First Branch as ruler of Annwn.

After Pwyll behaves discourteously during a hunt, the two eventually agree to exchange appearances and places for a year and a day. Pwyll enters Annwn carrying Arawn's identity and authority.

The arrangement gives him considerable opportunity.

His conduct while occupying another man's place becomes part of what allows hostility to develop into friendship.

That is the aspect of Arawn I bring into this initiation. Conduct when power is available.

There are choices we make because consequences constrain us.

Others reveal more because we could have acted differently and chose restraint anyway.

Authority tells us what we can do.

Character concerns what we decide to do with it.

The Working

I prepare each Derwydd Initiation individually around the person approaching it.

Before the work begins, I consider what masculinity currently means within your life and what has brought you to the rite.

You may be concerned with responsibility, fatherhood, leadership, confidence, vulnerability, anger, protection, relationships, ageing, transition, inherited expectations or another aspect of masculine experience.

You do not need to fit your circumstances into predetermined categories.

The rite is shaped around what you actually bring.

Gwydion, Lleu and Arawn are acknowledged within the initiation through the stories and questions associated with them rather than being invoked as a mystical trinity. The work moves through capability, becoming and conduct before returning to the person who must decide what these qualities mean in their own life.

The aim is not to produce a perfected masculine self.

It is to begin a more conscious relationship with the one already being lived.

Strength That Answers for Itself

There are versions of masculinity built around being unbreakable.

Never afraid. Never uncertain. Never needing help. Never backing down.

There are others built almost entirely in opposition to those ideas, as though masculinity becomes acceptable only once strength itself has been made suspicious.

Neither leaves much room for an ordinary human being.

Strength can be valuable. So can tenderness.

There are moments when firmness protects something worth protecting and moments when refusing to bend becomes pride.

There are responsibilities we should carry. There are others we need to share. There are times to speak clearly and times when listening requires more courage.

And there are forms of vulnerability that do not diminish strength at all. They simply prevent it from becoming armour worn long after the battle has ended.

The Welsh figures within this initiation offer no perfect formula.

Gwydion is capable and dangerous.
Lleu is powerful and profoundly vulnerable.
Arawn possesses authority and nevertheless places value upon conduct, agreement and restraint.

Perhaps wisdom begins partly in refusing to make any of them simpler than they are.

The same may be true of masculinity.

Continuing After the Initiation

An initiation marks a beginning.

You are not required to establish permanent devotional relationships with Gwydion, Lleu or Arawn afterwards.

You may find that one of their stories continues to hold your attention more strongly than the others. You may choose to study that figure further, make occasional offerings, return to the relevant Branches of the Mabinogi, or simply continue with the reflective practices provided to you.

You may also find that the central relationship developing from the initiation is not with one particular figure at all.

It may be with the questions.

What do I do with what I am capable of?
What kind of manhood have I inherited?
What responsibilities are genuinely mine?
When does strength require restraint?
When does protection become control?
What does integrity look like when nobody is watching?

Those questions are allowed to remain alive.

Your ritual photographs and written materials are delivered digitally following completion.

A working email address is required. I will contact you after ordering if further information is needed before preparing your initiation.

The rites I prepare are offered for spiritual practice, reflection and personal development. This initiation does not confer supernatural power, guarantee personal transformation or establish that one particular form of masculinity is spiritually superior to another.

It should not replace medical, psychological or other appropriate professional support.

Nothing within the initiation creates an irrevocable spiritual bond with Gwydion, Lleu, Arawn or any other figure. Continued practice remains your choice.

Because each initiation is prepared individually, completed ritual work cannot be refunded once preparation and performance have taken place.
