A place where demands can be set down for a while. Where the noise of other people's expectations does not have to follow us. Where rest does not need to be earned before we are permitted to take it.

The Blessing of Melangell is a personalised Welsh rite concerned with sanctuary, boundaries, and the quieter forms of protection.

It draws upon the story of Saint Melangell and the secluded valley in Powys that still bears her name.

About this rite

The story of Melangell belongs to the traditions surrounding Pennant Melangell, a remote valley beneath the Berwyn Mountains in Powys.

According to the inherited account, Melangell had withdrawn to the valley when Prince Brochwel encountered her during a hunt. A hare fleeing his hounds took refuge with her, and Melangell refused to surrender it. The encounter eventually became the foundation of her association with hares and with the place that bears her name.

Whatever can and cannot now be established about the historical Melangell, her tradition became deeply rooted in this particular Welsh landscape. A medieval church stands at Pennant Melangell, her reconstructed Romanesque shrine remains within it, and by the fifteenth century the site was already a destination for pilgrims.

I do not present the rite I prepare as an historical Melangell ceremony.

It is my contemporary practice, informed by the relationship between refuge and protection within her story.

The hare finds sanctuary, but sanctuary exists because someone is willing to hold its boundary.

The Blessing of Melangell is intended for periods when you feel overextended, exposed, crowded by demands, or simply in need of greater quiet around you.

It may suit someone trying to establish firmer boundaries without becoming closed off; someone whose home or personal space no longer feels sufficiently restful; or someone who has spent a long time attending to other people's needs and wants to create deliberate room for their own.

It can also accompany the creation of a physical sanctuary: a room, garden, reading corner, altar space, or another part of the home set aside for quiet and restoration.

This is not a rite for becoming unreachable.

Its concern is knowing where your boundary lies, what you allow across it, and when you are permitted to close the gate for a while.

Walking with Melangell

What draws me back to Melangell's story is not that she defeated the hunt.

She stopped participating in its terms.

The hare had reached her. Whatever Brochwel intended when he rode into the valley, the creature seeking refuge was not handed back.

The tradition that grew around that encounter eventually became inseparable from an actual place. Pennant Melangell remains secluded at the head of its valley, and Melangell's shrine continues to draw people there centuries later.

There is a difference between hiding from the world and having somewhere the world is not entitled to follow.

Sanctuary needs a boundary.

It also needs someone willing to keep it.
