Dôn | Welsh Rites for Composure, Insight & Authority

Dôn is one of the more elusive figures in surviving Welsh tradition.

Her name stands behind the Plant Dôn — the Children of Dôn — a family whose members appear throughout Welsh mythology. In the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, Gwydion and Gilfaethwy are identified as sons of Dôn, while Arianrhod is their sister. Other Welsh material places figures including Gofannon within the same family.

Yet Dôn herself remains largely beyond the stories.

Unlike Rhiannon, Blodeuwedd, Gwydion or Manawydan, she is not given a surviving narrative through which we can easily describe her character, choices or relationships. Later interpretations have attempted to fill that space, but much about Dôn remains uncertain.

I prefer not to make certainty where the tradition has left us with mystery.

This collection gathers contemporary rites and other work in which Dôn is approached with that uncertainty intact. Rather than assigning her a fixed modern role as a goddess of particular qualities, each offering begins with what the Welsh material can support and makes clear where modern reflection and spiritual practice begin.

For me, Dôn also invites a particular kind of attention: what can remain meaningful without being completely explained?

Her name persists. Her family persists. The stories of the Plant Dôn continue to be told.
