Paths alter around it. Names remain after the stories that first gave rise to them have become uncertain. What survives is not necessarily untouched.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes it is simply still here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYr Hen Wrach\u003c\/strong\u003e — \u003cem\u003ethe old woman\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003ethe hag\u003c\/em\u003e — is a contemporary Welsh initiation concerned with endurance, accumulated experience and the things that remain after difficulty has changed us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt draws upon a recurring presence within Welsh landscape folklore: old women, witches and giantesses associated with mountains, stones, bogs and other places where the boundary between human story and landscape becomes difficult to separate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese figures do not form one forgotten Welsh goddess, and I do not treat them as though they do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstead, the initiation begins among the scattered stories themselves, asking what they might offer someone learning not simply how to endure, but how to understand what endurance has asked of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e“Mae’r garreg yn aros, ond nid heb newid.”\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The stone remains, but not without change.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Old Woman in the Landscape\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no single Welsh equivalent of the Gaelic Cailleach.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWelsh tradition gives us something less easily gathered into one figure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross folklore and place tradition we encounter \u003cem\u003egwrachod\u003c\/em\u003e — witches or hags — alongside old women and giantesses whose stories have become attached to particular parts of the landscape. Some belong to mountains and mist. Others are remembered beside rocks or beneath them. Giantesses carry stones whose weight becomes part of the explanation for the landscape itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIndividual traditions differ considerably.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome of these women are threatening. Some are remembered only through a place-name or fragment of local story. Some belong to the enormous world of the giants. They should not be collapsed into a single personality simply because they share age, gender or association with the land.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat fragmentation matters to this initiation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eYr Hen Wrach\u003c\/em\u003e is therefore not presented here as the historical name of a Welsh goddess of stone or endurance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe phrase means \u003cstrong\u003ethe old woman\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003ethe hag\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWithin the rite I prepare, it names the figure through whom we approach this scattered body of Welsh folklore: not one ancient being reconstructed from fragments, but an old woman imagined at the meeting place between story, age and landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe initiation itself is my contemporary practice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Welsh traditions beneath it are allowed to remain more complicated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat This Initiation Explores\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are kinds of strength that are easy to recognise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEndurance is more ambiguous.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRemaining through difficulty can teach patience, resourcefulness and a clearer knowledge of what we can survive. It can also become a habit.
