One season of life has ended without the next becoming clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Long May\u003c\/strong\u003e is a contemporary Welsh rite for inhabiting those periods without allowing the waiting to consume everything around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt draws upon the strange, unresolved place occupied by Creiddylad ferch Lludd in \u003cem\u003eCulhwch ac Olwen\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNid yw aros yr un peth â sefyll yn llonydd.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eWaiting is not the same as standing still.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eCreiddylad and the First of May\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn \u003cem\u003eCulhwch ac Olwen\u003c\/em\u003e, Creiddylad is betrothed to Gwythyr ap Greidawl.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore she becomes his wife, Gwyn ap Nudd takes her away by force. Gwythyr pursues him, and the resulting conflict becomes brutal enough that Arthur eventually intervenes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis settlement does not resolve the question.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCreiddylad is returned to her father's house. Gwyn and Gwythyr are to fight for her every \u003cstrong\u003eCalan Mai — the first of May — until Judgement Day\u003c\/strong\u003e, when the final victor will have her. \u003cspan class=\"contents\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater interpreters have sometimes understood this recurring May battle as a contest between winter and summer, with Creiddylad representing spring or the returning earth. The calendrical element is certainly present in the medieval tale, but the surviving text itself does not explain the combat in those terms. We check for news. We imagine endings. We prepare ourselves for several futures at once.
