I physically carry the intention to the water, prepare the rite beside it, and allow the movement of the current to become part of the working itself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is a rite for the moment when the request is simple: Take this to the river for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThis rite may suit you if\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may come to \u003cem\u003eOffrwm yr Afon\u003c\/em\u003e because there is something you are ready to release, but ordinary reflection has not given that decision enough weight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePerhaps a relationship has ended while part of you remains caught in its aftermath. Perhaps grief, regret, disappointment or an old expectation continues to occupy more room than you want to give it. You may have been waiting for closure that another person cannot provide, or carrying something whose importance you do not wish to deny even though you no longer want it held so closely.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe rite may also suit you if you feel stagnant rather than specifically burdened. There may be no dramatic ending at all, only the sense that something has stopped moving and you want to mark a change in direction.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor some people, the reason is practical. They carry weather from the hills towards the sea, cut their way through rock, gather smaller streams and continue beyond the places where we first meet them. Welsh folklore and literature repeatedly place significance around wells, rivers, lakes, crossings and the movement between one shore and another.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI do not present \u003cem\u003eOffrwm yr Afon\u003c\/em\u003e as a reconstruction of one surviving historical Welsh river-release ceremony.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe rite is contemporary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIts Welsh grounding lies instead in relationship with landscape: approaching moving water as something with presence, history and direction rather than treating it as a decorative magical correspondence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA river does not make a judgement about what it carries. Other figures may be honoured where their stories genuinely fit the intention.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNo fixed group of deities is imposed upon every rite.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSometimes the river is enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Working\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore I prepare the rite, I will ask what you want taken to the water and what you hope the act of release will mean.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou do not need to send a long account, unless you wish to.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA name, a relationship, a period of life, a recurring thought, a grief, a fear, an attachment, a hope you are finally ready to stop waiting upon, or simply a few sentences about what feels stuck may be enough.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI then prepare the working around that intention and take it to suitable moving water.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe rite itself is shaped around three movements: acknowledging what has been carried, placing it deliberately into relationship with the river, and allowing the work to continue beyond the point where I leave the bank.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat is physically used will depend upon the rite and the water itself. I will not leave harmful materials, litter, wax, plastic, salt, unsuitable herbs or other damaging substances in the river.
