The rite I prepare is contemporary, bringing them into conversation while keeping their origins clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIts purpose is simple: to mark what is yours, tend its boundaries, and place it symbolically under watch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Hearth and the Threshold\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvidence of protective practice survives within Welsh homes themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eObjects intended or later interpreted as protective have been discovered concealed beneath hearths, within walls and beams, and around other structural points of buildings. Protective marks also survive around doors, fireplaces and other openings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese practices varied considerably across place and period. When violence erupts in Ireland, the tale describes him sheltering Branwen between himself and his shield.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater, mortally wounded, Brân instructs his surviving companions to carry his severed head back to Britain and eventually bury it at the White Mount in London, facing towards France. The tale associates its presence there with protection against invasion from across the sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI do not take this to mean that Brân was historically invoked to guard Welsh houses.
