Pwyll behaves discourteously during a hunt, driving Arawn’s hounds away from a stag they have brought down and allowing his own dogs to feed upon it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen confronted, Pwyll asks how the offence may be repaired.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe answer leads to an extraordinary exchange.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor a year and a day, Pwyll takes Arawn’s appearance and place in Annwn while Arawn takes his place in Dyfed. During that time, Pwyll must also confront Hafgan, Arawn’s rival, according to very particular instructions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat matters for this rite is not the idea that Arawn was historically a god of oaths.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe surviving story does not give us that.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat it does give us is an agreement carried carefully: responsibilities accepted, boundaries respected, instructions followed, restraint shown when restraint matters, and decisive action taken when the moment comes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe relationship between Arawn and Pwyll changes because the accord is kept well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat is the thread at the centre of this work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eIntegrity as Practice\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIntegrity can sound like a grand moral quality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn ordinary life, it is often much quieter. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt may mean doing the thing you said you would do, admitting when you have avoided something, holding a boundary without turning it into punishment, taking responsibility without carrying what belongs to someone else or choosing the harder honest action when the easier one would leave you divided against yourself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eArawn’s Accord does not ask you to become inflexible.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCircumstances change.
