Curiosity is enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eElen, the Roads and the Surviving Tradition\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eElen of the Ways occupies an unusual place between surviving Welsh tradition and contemporary spiritual practice, and I believe that uncertainty deserves to remain visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne important strand leads to \u003cstrong\u003eElen Luyddog\u003c\/strong\u003e, usually translated as Elen of the Hosts, who appears in the medieval Welsh tale \u003cem\u003eBreuddwyd Macsen Wledig\u003c\/em\u003e — \u003cem\u003eThe Dream of Macsen Wledig\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the tale, Macsen dreams of a remarkable woman in a distant land and sends messengers to find her. Their search eventually brings them to Wales and to Elen. After Macsen travels to meet her, she becomes his wife, and the story later associates her with roads constructed across Britain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis gives us an authentically Welsh Elen whose story contains travel, searching, roads, distance and the movement between places.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt does \u003cstrong\u003enot\u003c\/strong\u003e, however, give us a medieval Welsh goddess explicitly called “Elen of the Ways” who presides over sacred roads and thresholds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Elen encountered in contemporary Pagan and devotional practice has developed through later interpretation, in which Elen Luyddog, old roads, landscape, pilgrimage and other strands have been brought into conversation with one another. Sometimes we can see the destination but not yet know what the journey will ask of us, while at other times the next step is all that can reasonably be known.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAttentive walking asks something different from certainty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt asks us to notice where we are.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat might mean recognising when we are moving through habit rather than choice, when haste is preventing us from seeing what is already present, or when we are so concerned with reaching an imagined destination that we have stopped paying attention to the life through which we are actually travelling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eElen's association with roads provides the framework for exploring those questions without asking her to dictate their answers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Working\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI prepare each \u003cstrong\u003eElen of the Ways Initiation\u003c\/strong\u003e individually around the road you are presently walking and the relationship with Elen that you wish to explore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rite begins at the threshold, with attention given to where you understand yourself to be now rather than where you think you ought already to have arrived.
